Sr. Instructional Designer

The Senior Instructional Design Thought Leader is a visionary and expert in the field of instructional design, responsible for leading the organization’s learning strategy and creating cutting-edge learning solutions.

This role involves driving innovation in instructional design methodologies by exploring new approaches and leveraging emerging technologies to create engaging and effective learning experiences. It plays a key part in shaping and influencing the organizational learning culture, ensuring that continuous development and knowledge sharing are at the forefront. Additionally, the role includes mentoring a team of instructional designers, providing guidance and support to help them grow professionally, foster creativity, and achieve their full potential in designing impactful training programs.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of developing transformative learning experiences, staying ahead of industry trends, and contributing thought leadership to the field of learning and development.



Qualifications Needed:

  • Education:
    • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Learning & Development, or a related field. Relevant experience and/or Certifications may substitute for a University degree.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 10 years of experience in instructional design, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
    • Proven experience leading high-impact, large-scale learning and development projects, preferably in a corporate or global environment.
    • Demonstrated expertise in creating innovative, scalable learning solutions using the latest instructional design techniques and technologies.
  • Skills:
    • Strategic Leadership: Ability to develop and execute a forward-thinking learning strategy that drives organizational transformation.
    • Advanced Instructional Design: Deep understanding of instructional design models, adult learning theories, and learning technology integration.
    • Innovative Thinking: Track record of bringing new, innovative approaches to learning, including digital learning solutions (VR, AI, microlearning, etc.).
    • Technology Proficiency: Expertise in e-learning authoring tools (e.g., Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate), LMS platforms, and other learning technologies.
    • Data-Driven Approach: Proficiency in using learning analytics to measure the effectiveness of training programs and implement data-driven improvements.
    • Leadership: Strong leadership, mentorship, and coaching skills, with the ability to inspire and develop a high-performing team.
  • Certifications (Preferred):
    • Certifications such as Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP), Certified Instructional Designer (CID), or equivalent certifications.
    • Agile or Lean Learning certification is a plus.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Reports To: Chief Learning Officer (CLO) or Director of Learning & Development
  • Location: Remote/Hybrid with occasional travel to corporate offices and training sites
  • Overview:
    • The Senior Instructional Design Thought Leader is a visionary and expert in the field of instructional design, responsible for leading the organization’s learning strategy and creating cutting-edge learning solutions. This role involves driving innovation in instructional design methodologies, influencing organizational learning culture, and mentoring a team of instructional designers. The ideal candidate will have a track record of developing transformative learning experiences, staying ahead of industry trends, and contributing thought leadership to the field of learning and development.
  • Key Responsibilities:
    • Learning Strategy Development
      • Visionary Leadership: Lead the development and execution of an innovative instructional design strategy that aligns with the organization's business goals and fosters a learning culture.
      • Future-Oriented Planning: Stay ahead of industry trends, research, and best practices to ensure the organization remains at the forefront of learning and development.
      • Collaborative Partnership: Work closely with key stakeholders, including senior executives, subject matter experts (SMEs), and HR, to understand organizational needs and create impactful learning programs.
    • Innovation in Instructional Design
      • Design Leadership: Lead the creation of advanced learning solutions, using cutting-edge instructional design methodologies, including gamification, microlearning, social learning, and immersive learning technologies (e.g., AI, VR/AR).
      • Technology Integration: Leverage innovative e-learning tools and Learning Management Systems (LMS) to build scalable, accessible, and personalized learning experiences.
      • Thought Leadership: Serve as a thought leader in the instructional design community by researching, publishing, and presenting on trends, methodologies, and best practices in corporate learning and instructional design.
    • Team Leadership and Development
      • Mentorship and Coaching: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of instructional designers, ensuring continuous improvement and the development of new skills in instructional design, technology, and content creation.
      • Knowledge Sharing: Foster an environment of knowledge sharing, encouraging the team to experiment with new tools and approaches while staying aligned with organizational goals.
      • Performance Management: Ensure high standards of quality in all learning design deliverables through clear guidelines, quality assurance processes, and continuous feedback.
      • Facilitation: Facilitate engaging, interactive, and informative training sessions for employees at all levels, using best practices in adult learning and facilitation techniques.Deliver training through a blend of in-person, virtual, and e-learning methods.
    • Content Development and Delivery
      • Advanced Content Creation: Oversee the design and delivery of customized, learner-centered instructional materials across multiple formats (e-learning, virtual classrooms, workshops, blended learning) to support various audiences and learning styles.
      • Instructional Design Models: Apply advanced instructional design models such as ADDIE, SAM, and Agile to design, develop, and implement impactful training programs.
      • Content Curation: Lead the curation and development of learning content that is accessible, inclusive, and tailored to meet the specific needs of different employee segments (executives, managers, new hires, etc.).
    • Continuous Evaluation and Improvement
      • Learning Analytics: Use data-driven insights and learning analytics to measure the effectiveness of learning programs, identify gaps, and continuously enhance the learning experience.
      • Adaptive Learning: Implement adaptive learning strategies to provide personalized learning experiences based on real-time learner performance and feedback.
      • Quality Assurance: Establish and maintain quality standards for instructional materials and learning outcomes, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and learner needs.
    • External Thought Leadership
      • Industry Presence: Actively contribute to industry conferences, webinars, and professional networks by sharing expertise, insights, and best practices.
      • Research and Publication: Conduct research on the latest instructional design and learning technologies and publish thought leadership content in reputable industry journals, blogs, and white papers.
      • Collaboration with Industry Peers: Build and maintain relationships with other thought leaders, instructional designers, and learning professionals to stay connected with the latest developments and ideas.
