SEASONAL PART TIME MUSEUM EDUCATOR

Job Summary
Seasonal Museum Educators at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center facilitate a variety of museum-based programs including guided visits for school groups (K-6th grade) and hands-on workshops for families, including planetarium shows both in-house and off-site. Museum Educators assist in the supervision and maintenance of exhibits and serve as primary resources to visitors on topics such as astronomy, aviation, Earth and space science. Discovery Center programs take place on-site, off-site, and virtually, and occur days, nights, and weekends, with a potential for overnight programs in the future.

Seasonal Museum Educators report directly to the Education Coordinators and attend mandatory professional development sessions as scheduled. Seasonal Museum Educators are guaranteed a minimum of 15 hours per week and are required to work weekdays and either Saturdays or Sundays with some evenings required. From April 1 to June 14 the Discovery Center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:30am – 4:00pm. From June 14 until August 31 the Center will be open Monday through Sunday from 10:30am – 4:00pm.

Duties

• Presents a wide variety of science museum programs for school groups and the public, including planetarium shows, exhibit experiences, observatory and outdoor telescope viewing, demonstrations, workshops, summer camps, outreach programs and more.
• Leads or assists in set-up, coordination and breakdown of events as needed, so that the Discovery Center is prepared for the event, the event runs smoothly, and at the end, the Discovery Center is ready for the janitorial crew to perform its contracted maintenance duties. This includes the setting up and operation of a wide variety of computer, audio-visual, telescope and other equipment required to present science museum programs.
• Greets visitors in exhibit galleries, assisting them with exhibit use, and discussing science, technology, engineering and mathematics topics with the visitors.
• Assists in designing, implementing and reporting on educational experiences including program, show and exhibit content and delivery; educational activity guides; and other educational materials.
• Supports staff, volunteers, interns, contractors and others in science museum program development and delivery, including training them as needed.
• Assists in the safe, clean and proper storage, inventory, security, accessibility and functioning of all Discovery Center education team tools, materials, equipment, supplies and furnishings including portable planetarium.
• Provides supervision of the facility during public hours, workshops and special events to ensure the safety of patrons and staff, and safety and security of facility, exhibits and equipment.
• Complies with all Discovery Center policies, state & federal rules and regulations including, but not limited to, health and safety policies, and all civil rights laws.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Education: Associate degree in a science, technology, engineering and/or mathematics field, and/or six months of experience detailed below.
• Experience: Three month’s experience in teaching, presenting, training, demonstrating and/or creating programs or exhibits in a school, science center, museum, planetarium or related setting, or other appropriate experiences related to astronomy, aviation, Earth or space science.
• LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED: Valid New Hampshire driver's license or access to transportation.
