Controller - Portfolio Accounting

JOB Summary

The Controller of Portfolio Accounting will be responsible for managing the accounting processes for the firm’s investment portfolios. This individual will ensure the timely filing of financial statements, oversee the consolidation of property-level financial data, and implement policies and procedures that govern portfolio accounting. This role requires strong leadership skills, in-depth knowledge of accounting practices, and a collaborative approach to working with internal teams and external parties such as auditors and tax consultants. Controller of Portfolio Accounting will work with the CFO, division Controllers and Senior Managing Directors in all related business areas including acquisitions, disposal activities, distributions, and cash flow forecasting. This position requires advanced knowledge of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles ("GAAP").

JOB ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES – the following is not an all-inclusive list of job responsibilities and other job-related duties may be added or changed at any time by MCB to support business needs.

• Scheduling, Production and Distribution of all Financial Reporting Requirements: Ensure strict adherence to reporting deadlines, across all portfolios, to include quarterly financial statements via an Investor Portal, maintain timely distribution of Investor Reporting, Debt Covenants , Internal & external ad-hoc as needed. Responsible for Quality Control to ensure that portfolio-level financial statements are prepared in a consistent manner and in adherence to accounting principles and regulatory requirements.

• Consolidation of Property-Level Financial Statements: Oversee the consolidation of financial statements from various property-level operations, ensuring accuracy and consistency across the portfolio.

• Financial Statement Review: Review all financial statements for accuracy and adherence to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and other regulatory standards.

• Investor Distribution and Capital Call Process: Collaborate with various teams to coordinate and oversee the investor distribution and capital call processes, ensuring timely and accurate communication with investors and proper accounting of all related transactions. Coordinate delivery of related documents via an investor portal.

• Development of Policies and Procedures: Develop and implement policies and procedures that govern all aspects of portfolio accounting to maintain efficiency and ensure compliance with industry standards.

• Coordination of Tax and Audit Efforts: Coordinate all tax and audit efforts with external firms, ensuring all filings are completed accurately and on time.

• Internal Collaboration: Work closely with F&A Teams and cross departmentally, to ensure seamless workflows, adherence to P&P and problem resolution.

• Management and Mentorship: Supervise and develop accounting staff, providing guidance and training to ensure a high-performing team.

• Build and lead Portfolio Accounting Team: Lead the day-to-day operations of the Portfolio Accounting Team, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and adherence to deadlines in all accounting tasks related to the portfolio.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS/ABILITIES

• Minimum seven (7) years of operations accounting experience preferably in Commercial Real Estate or related industry

• CPA certification required; Big 4 accounting firm experience strongly preferred

• Expert knowledge of the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

• Experience managing and overseeing external audit and tax processes.

• Experience and proficiency required in financial account analysis, financial reporting, and overall cash management

• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

• Proficient with MRI or other related real estate and property management software platform preferred

• Microsoft Office365 software suite proficiency required, including advanced Excel user proficiency

• Effective oral and written communication skills; excellent accuracy/proofreading and attention to detail in all work products

• Proficiency and consistency with prioritizing workload, multi-tasking, working independently with minimal supervision and meeting work deadlines

• Effective staff management skills

• Maintain highest standard of work ethics and trustworthiness

Education Requirements:

Minimum Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution with degree focus in accounting, finance, real estate or business administration; Master’s Degree preferred.

Physical Requirements:

This position is primarily performed in the MCB corporate office in an open cubicle office setting; long periods of sitting and computer/keyboard use; reading documents; spreadsheet calculations; phone and other electronic equipment. Typing dexterity is needed; minimal lifting (<20 lbs.), standing, climbing.
