Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Highly qualified, experienced, and competent in accomplishing multi-discipline estimating functions as identified below:
- Capable of understanding and processing Request for Proposal (RFP) information and lead the estimating team(s) for scope specific responsibilities. Work with an estimating schedule on large estimates to ensure responsibilities and date specific items are met.
- Utilize codes, specifications, 3D models, isometric drawings, orthographic plans / sections, and bill-of-materials to perform detailed on-screen “material-take-off” (MTO) utilizing estimating software or utilizing conventional MTO means as dictated by project specifics and/or the sophistication of drawings provided.
- Prepare complete labor and material cost estimates using the MTO information and the estimating labor databases or by conventional (manual) means as project specifics dictate.
- Utilize codes, specifications, 3D models, drawings, plans and sections, and bill-of-materials to perform detailed site development and project estimates for concrete, structural, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, coatings, and insulation installation.
- Ability to review equipment and vendor information for installation estimating.
- Perform conceptual estimating when necessary for non-standard items or work functions.
- Structure the MTO conducive to customer bid form requirements and complete these bid forms for inclusion into proposals.
- Provide material lists to the Purchasing Department in various formats conducive to customer bid forms and vendors pricing capabilities.
- Ability to select support equipment, estimate associated costs, and incorporate into project estimates.
- Work with Engineering, Safety and QA / QC managers regarding costs they identify and / or project staffing they require included in the estimate to meet bid document requirements.
- Interface with customers, vendors and subcontractors as required regarding assigned estimates.
- Develop subcontractor scopes of work, solicit subcontractor bids, and evaluate complete subcontract analysis.
- Make subcontractor selection recommendations based on all factors that apply during estimate review meetings. Once a project is won, make these recommendations to project teams.
- Create detailed Project Execution Plans.
- Exercise significant independent discretion in developing final project estimates and in the application of “mark-up” and “mark-down” factors for management review and approval.
- Identify contingency & risk items throughout the estimating process for final estimate review.
- Assist the Project Controls Department with scheduling and sequency planning of the estimate.
- Prepare written Clarifications & Exclusions for inclusion into proposals.
- Assist the Proposal Manager / Coordinator as required in proposal preparation.
- Visit customer field locations as required to gain information (i.e. ascertain equipment needs, site pictures, construction strategies, etc.)
- Attend customer office and / or on-site meetings on assigned estimates as required (i.e. pre-bid meetings, proposal review meetings, project KOM, etc.)
- Facilitate Project Kick-offs and As-Sold transfers to the Project Team.
- Assists the Chief Estimator / Director of Pre-Construction in providing leadership for continuously improving the estimating and proposal process.
- Assists the Chief Estimator in mentoring, training, and checking the work of Estimators.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Estimator and/or Director of Pre-Construction.
- Effectively communicate and project the principles of McCarl’s Values and Core Competencies.
Qualifications:
- Extensive field and/or project experience in heavy industrial construction.
- Bachelor's degree (BS) in Engineering or Science from four-year College/University or two-year Associate Degree in Technical Field in combination with relevant field/construction site experience can be sufficient in meeting this requirement.
- At least 5 years estimating experience required.
- Possess experience in all facets of multi-discipline industrial construction estimating.
- High degree of understanding regarding engineering disciplines (i.e. mechanical, civil / structural, electrical, instrumentation, etc.) including the engineering information generated and utilized to create comprehensive industrial construction estimates.
- Experienced with fabrication processes and techniques.
- Working knowledge of estimating manuals and methods to produce complete construction estimates.
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills within all levels in the company.
- Ability to attain and promote good customer relationships (both internal and external).
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical, commercial, and legal documents.
- Ability to effectively present information to clients, top management and/or project teams.
- Advanced experience with Microsoft Office and Navisworks. Experience with AccuBid is a plus.
- Intermediate skills in CAD Models, Adobe, Bluebeam, and Viewpoint.
