The Earthwork Operations Manager is responsible for the leadership and management of the Earthwork Operations regionally. The Earthwork Operations Manager will partner with Senior Leadership to set the overall direction and focus of the Earthwork Operations group to best meet the regional goals and objectives. This position will be based either out of our San Diego, CA office or Newport Beach, CA office with travel required to jobsites in the surrounding area as needed.

For Southern California locations only, the salary range for this position is: $115,000 - $175,000 depending on experience. This does not include possible bonus and other benefits which can impact total compensation. Key Responsibilities:
Regional Objectives
- Assist in the development of the annual operating plan (AOP). Present at Regional Leadership as requested.
- Effectively communicate vision and strategy in support of Regional AOP goals and objectives.
- Ensure operations execute and support the AOP.
- Collaborate with Leadership from other Regions to ensure alignment to support both regional and national AOP objectives.
- Must have a developmental mindset to positively coach and support each partner.
- Lead, mentor and develop Project Staff and engage in positive Employee Management Connection (EMC).
- Manage multiple job-site staff members remotely, ensuring proper oversight and development of multiple levels of staff.
- Drive accountability for best practices and procedures set up and follow through for best outcome on projects.
- Partner with National Civil Regions and self-perform Civil Groups to support company-wide training efforts.
- Develop and lead regional training efforts for Earthwork Operations. Share regional training with other regions as appropriate.
- Work with Project Directors to ensure appropriate staffing assignments are being made in a timely manner.
- Work with Regional Talent Acquisition Manager and VP to develop a recruiting plan to acquire Interns, new hire Project Engineers, and experienced professionals and craft as needed to meet the AOP Goals.
- Recommend self-improvement programs that may assist employees in their professional and personal development.
- Responsible for P&L on each project. Become thoroughly knowledgeable of projected costs, contingent liabilities, and contingent savings/increased profits.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the McCarthy/Owner contract and oversee the entire field operation to achieve contract compliance.
- Maintain consistency in operations and leverage and adhere to the Self-Perform Process Map
- Monitor production daily. Review labor cost and productivity reports weekly and appropriately manage quantity reporting and projections.
- Monitor receipt of subcontractor bonds and periodically review status of subcontractor management, change order processing and shop drawings.
- Anticipate and assist the project staff in resolving problems involving the Grading Operations.
- Ensure lessons learned and Earthwork Operations Quality incidents are shared across region and company. Coordinate and document with Quality Director and Project Directors.
- Champion job site safety effort, motivating the on-site team in the implementation of McCarthy safety guidelines to achieve Regional Goals of no injuries.
- Implement all applicable Safety Programs and EEO/Affirmative Action Programs.
- Assist the project staff in the development of the construction schedule.
- Monitor schedule performance.
- Independently review schedule, and implement work plans to capitalize on schedule opportunities and/or mitigate potential schedule risks.
- Oversee quality management program to achieve contract compliance and a quality project.
- Review Earthwork Operations GMP’s in conjunction with Precon team review and finalization.
- Assist the Marketing Department in the preparation of presentations and interviews; participate in interviews.
- Identify potential clients and take necessary action to achieve additional sales.
- Participate with team in project pursuit efforts with the client, develop written content for RFQ/P responses and attend project interviews as assigned by Senior Leadership.
- Work with the regional Preconstruction groups to ensure appropriate Earthwork support is provided on preconstruction efforts.
- Provide constructability reviews during preconstruction.
- Assist in developing a work plan during preconstruction to produce an accurate and competitive estimate.
- Establish/maintain a good relationship with owner, design team and Subcontractors.
- Recommend self-improvement programs that may assist employees in their professional and personal development.
- Maximize McCarthy's visibility in the surrounding community.
- Participate in industry organizations and attend conferences that are beneficial to Castle’ connection to the market and are educational in nature.
Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in Self-Perform Grading/Earthwork Operations
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management/Engineering required.
- Direct experience leading multiple construction projects in excess of $20M.
- 10 years of progressive experience in construction management
- In-depth knowledge of intricate commercial construction principles/practices required.
- Experience leading multiple successful project teams, including development of direct reports, and maintaining relationships with external entities.
- Advanced knowledge of construction principles/practices required.
- Experienced dealing with subcontracts, subcontractors and/or self-perform work.
