Position Title: Special Education Teacher – Self-Contained Classroom (Medically Fragile/Severe Needs)

 

Position Summary: The Special Education Teacher for a self-contained classroom in an exclusively special education program supporting students with significant medical and cognitive needs is responsible for creating a structured, compassionate, and adaptive learning environment. This teacher will implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to students with diverse, often severe, physical and cognitive disabilities. The position requires collaboration with related services, families, and support staff to ensure each student’s physical, emotional, and educational needs are met to the fullest extent

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement developmentally appropriate, differentiated instructional plans aligned with IEP goals and state standards to include functional academic, life skills, and sensory-based activities

  • Utilize assistive technology and alternative communication devices to enhance student engagement and accessibility.

  • Establish a structured, safe, and nurturing classroom environment that promotes positive behavior and addresses each student’s sensory, physical, and social-emotional needs.

  • Develop individualized behavior support plans and implement evidence-based interventions as needed

  • Monitor and support students' medical needs, including administering medications, monitoring health conditions, and coordinating care plans under the direction of the medical professionals.

  • Ensure compliance with district and state protocols for health, safety, and emergency situations.

  • Communicate regularly with families to provide updates on student progress, share strategies for home support, and encourage family involvement.

  • Working with the IEP team, develop an IEP that establishes goal, supports progress, and coordinates necessary supports.

  • Maintain accurate records, documentation, and data collection as required by state and district standards.

  • Participate in district and school professional development sessions focused on enhancing services for students with severe disabilities.

Qulaifications: 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Licensure: Valid South Carolina Teaching License with appropriate Special Education endorsement.
  • Experience: Experience working with medically fragile students or students with severe disabilities is preferred
