Mechanic (General)
Overview
Reports to Fleet Maintenance Manager
The Mechanic must perform major and minor repairs in all phases of maintenance related to and necessary for a safe and reliable fleet consistent with corporate direction, policies, procedures and objectives.
The primary responsibility of the Mechanic is to perform the repairs, control work flow and quality of repairs and parts usage. This individual is responsible for all phases of maintenance, including meeting any deadlines or requests by the Fleet Maintenance Manager.
Responsibilities
- Must perform all duties of a Class B mechanic.
- Must interface with management for shift operation.
- Must be able to operate class B vehicle.
- Must perform major and minor repairs in all phases of maintenance.
- Lighting, electrical, air brake and suspension systems, clutch, differential and PM Service work.
- Must do prefabrication, torch and wielding as necessary.
- Perform minor engine repairs to gas and diesel engines.
- Must trouble shoot (determine mechanical problems) with a minimum of supervision.
- Must perform duties of safety lane, fueling and tire man as necessary.
- Must perform all duties with a minimum of direct supervision.
- Must be yard qualified.
- Must have the ability to properly use necessary test equipment, hand power tools to satisfactorily perform their functions in a professional manner.
- Read and interpret maintenance parts manuals and wire diagrams.
- Do necessary paperwork in a neat manner so it is understandable.
- Must be able to lift parts weighing as much as 100 lbs for proper removal and installation on fleet vehicles.
- Comply with all law and regulations as well as company policies and procedures.
- Maintain tractor and trailer fleet to ensure lowest cost per mile for maintenance is achieved and fleet condition meets DOT compliant standards in all areas of maintenance at all times.
- Control work flow, quality of repairs and parts usage.
- Record road failures and effect necessary repairs.
- Support standards and decisions.
- Forecast workloads.
- Maintain records and logs of work needed and performed.
Education
- A certificate program in automotive technology training preferred but not required, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience
- 3 years’ experience in a Class B mechanic role
- Must be Class B Mechanic certified
- Must be able to operate class B vehicle.
- Experience with troubleshooting, repairs, and preventative maintenance on all systems related to Heavy/Light Trucks and Trailers
- Experience with Thermo King Climate Control and Interlift lift gates preferred
- Experience in the repair and maintenance of trucks
- Must be yard qualified.
- Must have the ability to properly use necessary test equipment, hand power tools to satisfactorily perform their functions in a professional manner.
- Read and interpret maintenance parts manuals and wire diagrams.
- Must be able to lift parts weighing as much as 100 lbs for proper removal and installation on fleet vehicles.
- A certificate program or degree in automotive technology training preferred
- Thorough knowledge of heavy truck/trailer repair and maintenance
- Knowledge of DOT rules and regulations
- Warranty recovery process knowledge a plus
- Knowledge of industry known best practices for repairs
- Ability to work independently and within team settings
- Strong analytical, communication and interpersonal skills

- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google G Suite excel spreadsheets and word.
