What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at McConkey Auction Group?

The McConkey Auction Group is the region’s fastest growing wholesale auto auction and we’re accepting resumes for a full-time Controller. This role supports the establishment, maintenance, and enhancement of accounting principles, practices, and procedures and is responsible for ensuring completion of accounting and financial activities. Our Controller serves as a strategic partner to the business while assisting in the management of daily, monthly, and annual accounting functions, including:
- Exercises broad supervision of fiscal activity to ensure proper controls and safeguard company funds and assets.
- Oversees the processing of receipts, expenditure of disbursements, budgeting, ACH and wire transfers, and compliance with MAG’s policies and regulations.
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by understanding existing regulatory and licensing requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions and overseeing and ensuring accurate, timely and compliant filing of business and occupational taxes, personal property taxes, property taxes, sales and use taxes, and Form 8300 reports.
- Establishes and maintains the general ledger with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Responsible for month-end close and financial reporting duties, including preparation of journal entries, financial statements, and account reconciliations.
- Identifies opportunities to increase efficiencies by standardizing work and eliminating redundancies.
- Prepare supporting documentation and manage the relationship with external CPA for timely filing of corporate income taxes and annual review.
- Follows procedures for systematic retention, protection, retrieval, transfer and disposal of records.
- Works with CFO to forecast cash flow needs and recommend appropriate cash management strategies.
- Coordination with various areas of the company across different locations to ensure accounting consistency, integrity, and a high level of customer service is provided to both external and internal customers.
- Directly manages the administration and accounting staff (4-6 team members).
Successful candidates will possess a Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance (CPA preferred) and a minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience including managing processes, developing standards and preparing financial statements. They will have experience in partnering with an executive team, possessing a high level of written and oral communication skills. Candidates must also have strong organizational and analytical skills as well as the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities. All candidates must possess a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
