POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Process Control Engineer is responsible for supporting and managing capital projects for process and packaging equipment involving programming, engineering, integration, and creation of related PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo controllers, robotics, and industrial networking devices. In addition, this position manages and directs all electrical activities and provides leadership and technical expertise to the process and production departments at the French’s Manufacturing Plant. Additionally, this person will support the plant in day-to-day operations through assistance with equipment troubleshooting and participation in plant initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Troubleshoot various networks and communications protocols – Ethernet/IP, DeviceNet, Data Highway.
- Collaborate with McCormick IT department on all IT related tasks for the Springfield facility as assigned.
- Leads a team in a specific function area in a manner consistent with the core beliefs and guiding principles of McCormick's High Performance System.
- Provides regular performance feedback and oversees development plans/training plans for individuals within the team.
- Actively uses performance and development tools to document and facilitate improvement/recognition discussions.
- Rewards and recognizes performance achievements.
- Removes barriers to prevent the team from achieving goals. Partners with Operations leaders to prioritize and escalate as necessary. Enforce escalation plan effectively.
- Self-direction of daily activities relating to project execution, control system development, technical documentation, and plant support. Monitor progress against objectives and schedules and develop measurement tools to track effectiveness of projects completed.
- Development and execution of projects to deliver cost savings, improved productivity, business continuity, capacity/capability expansion, safety improvements, CCI and quality improvements through the modification of existing equipment and/or implementation of new equipment.
- Assist plant facilities team with machinery upgrades and management of daily processes
- Management of CAAP (Capital Asset Acquisition Proposal) projects, sometimes exceeding $500,000 in value, including Project Management documentation.
- Maintain full responsibility for technical documentation of the electrical drawings, manuals and troubleshooting guides of the related projects.
- Collaborate with Maintenance Department to identify critical spare parts and ensure sufficient levels of inventory are planned for as new components/equipment are implemented.
- Assist plant, headquarters and corporate departments in meeting their annual objectives.
- Participate in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) Pillar team as assigned by the plant Steering Committee.
- Utilizes problem solving tools and methodologies to implement continually improve processes within the function.
- Demonstrates a sense of urgency and tenacity to resolve problems and implement process improvements.
- Leads root cause analysis when required for failures that meet the applicable threshold.
- Develops and ensures all functional procedures and best practices are documented and continually improved.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and several initiatives at the same time.
- Work flexible hours as required for project installation, commissioining, and start-up.
- Other duties as assigned, relating to Electrical and Controls Engineering.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s, or higher, degree in Electrical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering, or in Electrical Engineering Technology.
- Relevant production and/or engineering experience in a manufacturing plant (co-op and internship experience will be considered).
- Knowledge of industrial controls equipment, including PCs, PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servo drives, field instrumentation, and industrial communication devices/protocols.
- Knowledge of process and/or packaging equipment.
- Knowledge of manufacturing/production metrics such as OEE, DPM, etc.
- Experience writing accurate technical documentation.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Experience managing projects through to successful completion
- Knowledge of regulatory compliance issues.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Up to 25% travel required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- SAP experience
- Minimum 1 year of relevant production and/or engineering experience in a manufacturing plant (co-op and internship experience will be considered).
- Experience in food or pharmaceutical manufacturing industry.
- Experience leading teams.
- Experience with TPM, Six Sigma, or similar continuous improvement system.
- Experience with machine safe guarding according to ANSI/OHSA standards.
- Experience writing training and troubleshooting documents then training others to these.
- Experience with Microsoft Office.
