THE ROLE

McDonald Building Company is seeking a Senior Estimator to support the preconstruction goals and estimating efforts by providing reliable and competitive estimates that our clients can trust with confidence. The Senior Estimator is a critical member of the construction project life cycle and must be eager to build lasting relationships with our trade partners. This position will report to our VP of Preconstruction.

YOU MAY BE A MATCH IF YOU

• hold a Bachelors Degree from a reputable college or university (preferably Construction Management or related focus)
• have 5 years of estimating experience with a construction management firm (7-10 years preferred)
• have knowledge and experience with OST (OnScreen Takeoff) or similar program
• are competent in utilizing Building Connected, our ITB software or similar program
• are highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and Bluebeam
• have specialized experience using Excel and formulas to create and maintain bids
• have experience with Procore Construction Management Platform
• can competently interpret and analyze plans, specifications, and building code
• have a strong understanding of the construction project life cycle
• have a solid understanding of the various types of construction contracts
• are a team player with a reputation of hard work and strong personal values
• are eager to build lasting relationships with market trade partners
• have robust negotiation skills
• can be trusted to hold yourself accountable
• are acutely organized to meet tight deadlines
• are self-motivated and able to work independently
• maintain a positive and professional attitude under pressure

• disciplined in managing and executing multiple tasks and assignments

WHAT YOU’LL DO

·       solicit and qualify bidders for each project, negotiate terms, and qualify incoming bids

·       prepare detailed estimates at various levels of completion (conceptual, schematic/budgetary, DD, CD, etc.), including proposal estimate, analysis, unit counts, and qualifications/alternates

·       manage the RFI process

·       attend pre-bid meetings, walk-thru, etc. to determine scope of work required, analyze site conditions and contract documents (RFP’s)

·       collaborate and perform preconstruction services directly with project architects, consultants, trade partners, owners, and field staff on estimate status and critical issues

·       calculate complete takeoffs of scope of work

·       manage multiple bid proposals concurrently

·       trade procurement and preparation of subcontracts bid for different contract types (Lump Sum, Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP), Cost Plus, etc.)

·       compare, analyze and qualify subcontractor bids

·       perform value engineering as needed

·       collect, analyze and apply historical project data to new proposals

·       provide preconstruction support throughout the construction period

·       participate in pre-construction meetings with project management teams

·       work with other departments to further develop best practices that continuously improve business processes

·       purchase trades and negotiate awards

·       create scopes of work and subcontracts
