TITLE: AFJROTC Instructor                                                                                             APPROVED 02/24/25  

LOCATION: McDowell Intermediate High School

RATE: Pay is determined by Department of Defense allocation

 

             

QUALIFICATIONS:       

 

     1. Retired Air Force NCO with required time for retirement from active duty, National Guard, or Reserves with at least 10             years of service, or currently serving in the Air National Guard/Air Force Reserve (traditional/drilling) with at least 10               years of service, or Honorably Discharged Veteran from a component of the Air Force with at least 10 years of service             and separated no longer than 60 months.

     2. Possession of an Associate degree (enlisted) or Bachelor degree (officer) in any discipline. If not previously certified to             teach by a state or state-approved college or university, may be required to work toward certification depending upon             specific state or school requirements at the time of employment.

     3. Completion of the Air Force Instructors’ Course – is mandatory for AFROTC certification, which is valid for five years, at           which time the USAF may require a recertification at a USAF workshop.

     4. Hold/held a current, final, or retired grade of E6 to E9, or O3 to O6 (recently commissioned officers who met all criteria           to apply while they were enlisted may apply as O1/O2).

     5. Hold/held any Air Force Specialty Code

     6. Knowledge of audiovisual presentation methods, curriculum planning, Air Force educational programs, drill and                       ceremonies, and educational administration, including tests and measurements.

     7. Possession of self-direction, initiative, self-reliance, dynamic understanding of the physical, intellectual, social, and                 emotional growth patterns of high school students, good moral character, and an enthusiasm for aerospace science,               teaching, and the Air Force.

     8. Such alternatives to the above as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

REPORTS TO: MIHS Principal

 

JOB GOAL: Manage and administer the AFJROTC program. Ensure effective employment of the cadet officials. Supervise cadet operations and activities.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Ensure the development and supervision of curriculum in action trips, fundraising, and other curricular activities.
  2. Initiate new techniques for developing effective instruction and improving opportunities for students. Stay current with the literature in the field.
  3. Manage the administrative, logistical, and financial management of the unit.
    1. Prepare required reports and communications.
      1. Administrative and statistical reports.
      2. Publications and forms.
  • Certificates of training or completion.
  1. AFJROTC visit checklists.
  2. AFJROTC scholarship applications.
  3. Instructor recertification requirements.
  • School and community news releases.
  • School and personal financial contracts.
  1. Records of Military Property Custodian.
  2. Department of Defense surplus records.
  1. Budget for and procure uniforms, uniform accessories, and transportation.
  2. Supervise the care, storage, and replacement of uniforms.
  3. Establish a reference library to include examination materials, audiovisuals, periodicals, and procedures for conducting an annual inventory of educational materials.
  1. Advise the principals and central office of the department needs for materials, equipment, facilities, and program improvements.
  2. Ensure the integration of the AFJROTC program into the school environment.
    1. Cooperate with the school, community, veteran, and parent groups.
    2. Participate in student information programs and public service events.
    3. Establish aerospace science as an integral academic and administrative component of the school program.
    4. Career Cruising/Freshman Seminar.
  3. Make AFJROTC presentations to local high schools and junior high schools and develop community, staff, and student workshops, demonstrations, and visitations as necessary.
  4. Develop and implement procedures for the selection, purchase, and inventory of all new equipment, textbooks, and materials within the department.
  5. Supervise and assign work to JROTC Cadets. Review and monitor the course plan of each member of the AFJROTC staff.
  6. Maintain a liaison with Air Force representatives in logistics, finance, and academic areas to ensure effective utilization of Air Force resources.
  7. Supervise JROTC Cadets who will participate during summer activities.
    1. Teach Aerospace Science and Leadership Education courses.
    2. Conduct leadership seminars and drill practices.
    3. Update curriculum materials and lesson plans and develop associated media aids.
    4. Attend AFJROTC workshops.
    5. Solicit assistance from support base personnel.
    6. Contact government surplus agencies.
    7. Brief civic groups, parent-teacher organizations, and military and school officials.
  8. Plan, organize, and direct the corps organization.
    1. Appoint cadet positions.
    2. Assign cadet duties and responsibilities.
    3. Rotate cadet positions.
    4. Assign command and staff functions.
    5. Maintain cadet conduct and deportment.
    6. Control uniform wear and hair standards.
    7. Control the issuance and wear of cadet insignias and badges.
    8. Establish and guide cadet evaluation boards.
    9. Conduct summer encampments and other field activities.
    10. Distribute cadet awards and decorations for local and national organizations.
    11. Conduct corps activities such as drill team and color guard performances, military balls, dining-ins, dining-outs, flag raisings, parades, cadet newspapers, field trips, orientation, flights, honorary organizations, fund raising activities, briefing teams, and model airplane rocket clubs.
    12. Sponsor drill teams.
    13. Sponsor any other functions that will further the objective of the AFJROTC program.
  9. Coordinate AFJROTC installation visits with installation commanders or their designated representatives for support and service including billeting, messing facilities and hospitalization, medical care for emergencies occurring while cadets are participating in AFJROTC visits, local orientation flights in DOD aircraft, and transportation by military vehicles, when available.
  10. Ensure the cadets who are participating in AFJROTC trips or visits are directly supervised by one of the AFJROTC instructors.
  11. Maximize the use of appropriate technology in the department’s program and develop personal proficiency in the use of the Air Force programming.
  12. Perform any duties needed to develop the AFJROTC department.
  13. Any other duties assigned by the Superintendent or their designee.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  1. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  2. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical situations.

  1. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  2. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  1. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.
  2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
  3. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
  4. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
