SUMMARY
Sets form to grade for concrete flatwork such as sidewalks, driveways, handicap ramps, curbs, and gutters. Smooths and finishes surfaces of poured concrete to specified finishes. Read and understand the contents of the MCE Corporation Employee Handbook and understand and implement the Health, Safety, and Environmental Program Manual.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Set forms for concrete flatwork to the required grades and place dowels and rebar according to specifications. Prepare and grade the base, adding rock if necessary.
- Read blueprints and drawings to determine material needs, layout patterns, and foundation alignment. Clean and inspect surfaces, apply sealing and hardening agents, fill expansion joints, and install rainscreen water systems.
- Handle the discharge chute of the truck to direct concrete accurately into forms. Spread concrete into hard-to-reach areas using a rake or shovel.
- Level concrete to the specified depth and consistency using handheld screeds and floats. Smooth and shape freshly poured concrete surfaces to achieve the desired finish and jointing pattern.
- Finish and tool the concrete as specified, adding aggregate for exposed surfaces if needed. Remove rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces and patch holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound. Hand-mix concrete when required.
- Break up and remove old concrete surfaces for repairs or replacements.
- Operate small machinery safely and effectively. Report any mechanical defects or safety hazards involving pickups or machinery to the Field Supervisor or Mechanic Supervisor promptly.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Generally this is a subordinate position directed by the Concrete Field Supervisor, but employee may be asked to manage other laborers or truck driver/laborers. The employee is then responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and performance of the crew. The employee then carries out responsibilities in accordance with MCE Corporation policies and applicable laws.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
- Minimum of two years experience as a cement mason.
- Minimum of two years as a concrete finisher
