Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to oversee the financial operations of our construction company, dumpster services company and several real estate entities. This pivotal role will ensure financial health through accurate reporting, process improvements, and the creation of efficient systems. The Controller will manage all aspects of financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and internal controls, while also driving automation and process enhancements. Additionally, this position will involve human resource management, including hiring and team development.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee day-to-day accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and month-end/year-end closings.
- Prepare and review accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, profit & loss statements, and cash flow reports.
- Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts, and financial projections for the construction company and real estate entities.
- Ensure compliance with all tax, legal, and regulatory requirements, including working with the outside CPA on the filing of tax returns and documentation of financial records.
- Implement and improve internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with corporate policies.
Process Automation & Efficiency Improvements
- Lead the effort to identify, implement, and optimize automation tools and software to streamline financial reporting, invoicing, and other financial processes.
- Build and establish efficient accounting systems and workflows, reducing time spent on manual processes and increasing operational efficiency.
- Continuously assess financial operations, identify areas for automation, and implement improvements in the company’s accounting software, reporting tools, and overall process.
- Ensure accuracy and timeliness of reporting by integrating new technologies and automating routine processes (e.g., using cloud-based systems, automated payroll, invoice management).
Construction Project Financial Management
- Manage financial oversight of construction projects, ensuring proper cost tracking, billing, and revenue recognition.
- Collaborate with project managers to monitor budgets and timelines, and proactively address any discrepancies or variances.
- Prepare job cost reports and assist in analyzing profitability for individual projects.
- Ensure compliance with construction industry accounting standards, including lien waivers, retention management, and work-in-progress reports.
Real Estate Entity Financial Oversight
- Oversee financial operations and performance tracking for multiple real estate entities, including property acquisitions, dispositions, and ongoing portfolio management.
- Monitor rental income, property expenses, and financial performance of real estate holdings.
Human Resources & Team Management
- Lead, manage, and develop the finance team, including accountants, bookkeepers, and other financial staff.
- Hire, train, and mentor new employees, ensuring they are equipped to perform their roles effectively and adhere to company policies and best practices.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and provide feedback to team members to foster professional growth and efficiency.
- Foster a culture of collaboration and accountability within the finance team.
- Collaborate with the owner to manage employee benefits, payroll processing, and other HR-related tasks as necessary.
Leadership & Strategic Support
- Provide financial insights and strategic recommendations to the owner on key business decisions.
- Manage cash flow and treasury operations, ensuring the company maintains sufficient liquidity to meet its financial obligations.
- Play a key role in financial forecasting and strategic planning to support growth initiatives in both construction and real estate sectors.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field; CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role, preferably in the construction or real estate industry.
- Strong understanding of construction project accounting, including cost tracking, job costing, and progress billing.
- Proficient in accounting software (QuickBooks and Procur); experience with automation tools and cloud-based accounting solutions highly desired.
- Solid understanding of financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting processes.
- Excellent knowledge of financial regulations, and compliance requirements, particularly in the construction and real estate industries.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to manage and motivate teams.
- Ability to think strategically and analytically, with excellent problem-solving skills.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
