Job Description

The Fabrication Shop Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring a safe and compliant working environment within the metal fabrication shop This position is responsible for enacting the safety protocols for McKenney’s fabrication shops through guidance and support to McKenney’s operations to help minimize the potential for employee injury, property damage and third-party liabilities resulting from incidents. The position reports to the Corporate Safety Director and key expectations for the position include evaluating, developing, planning, directing, training, and implementing safety initiatives throughout McKenney’s onsite and offsite fabrication shops. It is expected that these initiatives will result in continuous improvement of McKenney’s Safety process as respects to fabrication operations. This position requires an individual who can collaboratively work with Logistics and Field Operations leaders and help influence business partners to support our vision of achieving a Zero Incident Culture

Essential Functions

Key expectations of the role include the following:

  • Implement and evolve comprehensive safety policies and procedures specific to all McKenney's fabrication operations.
  • Assist Shop Superintendents with evaluating safety risks for existing and new tools/equipment. Partner with shop superintendents to ensure the proper machine guarding and tool use, SOPs, and training is completed on equipment.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of equipment, machinery, tools, and work areas to identify potential hazards.
  • Conduct root cause analysis reports on all fabrication shop incidents and near misses, ensuring follow-up corrective actions have been taken to help prevent recurrence.
  • Walk each fabrication shop, warehouse, and yard at least once/a week and generate a list of at-risk behaviors using a Field Visit Report. Review at-risk observation findings and work with shop superintendents to ensure risk reduction changes have been implemented.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the shop, actively engaging with employees to answer questions and address safety concerns.
  • Provides assistance in the management of and completion of Weekly 5S Audits.
  • Coordinate with the Logistics Team weekly inspections of trailers, flatbeds, stake body units, and duct trailers with respect to load securement practices.
  • Complete and document monthly inspections on rigging equipment and practices employed by the warehouse and in the yard.
  • Review near-miss reporting submitted from all fabrication shops and warehouses within 24 hours of submission. The grade for quality and follow-up with the shop superintendent on corrective actions.
  • Coordinate and conduct monthly shop safety training with all fabrication shops and warehouses.
  • Provide support to superintendents on risk elimination card reviews, incentive programs, safety lunches, My Good Idea,s and other initiatives.
  • Serve as a technical advisor for fabrication shops and Logistics operations by providing research and support on emerging safety risks.
  • Provide support in managing all OSHA compliance and record keeping in conjunction with the Corporate Safety Director for the campus operations.
  • Plan and facilitate the implementation of safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and OSHA rules and regulations for campus operations.
  • Coordinate and help administrate effective fabrication shops and warehouse programs will include, but are not limited to hoisting & rigging, ergonomics, fire prevention, robbery/theft security, safe handling of

chemicals, personal protective equipment, general electrical safety, lock-out tag-out, fall protection, machine guarding, scaffolding, confined space, fall protection, etc.

  • Conduct research for operations, NFPA, OSHA, DOT issues, or any other technical subject requiring similar analysis.
  • Provide support in the continued development of McKenney’s fleet safety practices. Become an active and influential member of McKenney’s Fleet Focus Group.
  • Notify the Corporate Safety Director and assigned campus leaders of situations that are immediately dangerous to the life and health of employees (or are recurring life-threating behaviors/conditions).
  • Train employees on proper safety practices, emergency procedures, and the correct usage of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain safety records, including incident reports, training documentation, and safety-related statistics.
  • Organize safety meetings and workshops to promote a culture of safety awareness and continuous improvement.
  • Stay updated with industry best practices and emerging safety trends, integrating them into the shop’s safety programs.
  • Collaborate with external safety agencies during audits and inspections, ensuring the shop’s compliance.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations for the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Corporate Safety Director or McKenney’s senior leadership.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position typically does not have supervisory responsibility but may involve supervisory responsibility for a technical assistant as directed by the Director of Safety.

Work Environment

This job is based McKenney’s office and will include work at jobsites and offsite locations (e.g. general contractor’s offices, conferences, etc.). Limited/occasional weekend work may be required based on demands from the Profit Center/Department.

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years in applied safety management functions in the manufacturing/fabrication industry. Specific mechanical contractor trade experience is a plus.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, and DOT
  • OSHA 501 (or equivalent) minimum training credentials – additional training credentials preferred.
  • Work towards any professional certifications such as CSP, ARM, OHST, or CIH a plus
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel & Outlook
  • A degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, codes, and standards.
