Sonographer
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
A Sonographer performs diagnostic ultrasound exams following interpreting radiologist protocols. The Sonographer verifies the provider’s order for accuracy and completeness; cares for the patient by explaining the procedure, showing concern for comfort and modesty, oversees all safety procedures, and providing excellent images for the patient’s continuum of care in the diagnostic process. Superior customer service is paramount to the entire patient’s experience.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that perfects patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors- Interacts professionally with patient/ family.
- Performs Ultrasound exams based on knowledge of abdominal, pelvic, small parts, heart and routine vascular physiology and disease- * MCH sonographers are supported by Medical Staff per policy to provide an emergent impression to the ordering provider when needed. Providers should always refer to official Radiology reports.
- Records images and completes required worksheets for the interpreting Radiologist.
- Provides care proper to the condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric, and general population.
- Assesses patient pain interfering with imaging procedure; makes the right physician contact for intervention.
- Follows ALARA principles ensuring lowest dose to get acceptable diagnostic quality imaging.
- Selects proper equipment, technique, and protocol to use for procedure and decides most suitable anatomical posture and positions.
- Responsible for safe handling of equipment
- Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures, follows universal precautions- manages/ starts IVs for Radiology needs.
- Helps in keeping basic records and reports.
- Helps in training of students and ancillary personnel.
- Takes ultrasound calls according to monthly schedule after the closing of the regular department hours if needed.

Qualifications
Physical Requirements:
- Physically demanding, high-stress environment
- Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
- Pushing and pulling heavy objects
- Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients
- Manual and finger dexterity
- Hand and eye coordination
- Standing and walking for extensive periods of time
- Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
- Must be able to pass a background check and drug screening.
Education/Experience:
- High School graduate
- Graduate of an accredited School of Ultrasonography
Licenses/Certifications:
- Registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers
- Sonographers performing Echoes should be registered or registry eligible in Adult Echo
- Sonographers performing breast imaging should be registered or registry eligible in Breast
- Certified by the State of North Dakota to practice and administer ultrasound.
- Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty as appropriate
- Registry-eligible candidates will be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Current BCLS certification.
