Definition: The purpose of this position is to provide technical support to the McKinley County GIS Center. This is accomplished by creating Rural Address Certificate; updating and maintaining County maps files; creating and printing various maps; and providing customer service. Other responsibilities include gathering field data; installing and replacing street signage; and performing other duties as requested.
Essential Job Functions: The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the common duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-common tasks.
- Provides customer service by attending to in-person customer request; answers telephone calls and responds to emails regarding various GIS related requests.
- Creates Rural Address Certificates for customers; verifying valid rural addresses on database; printing certificates; providing plaque with house number for clients; interacting with customer; and updating GIS databases.
- Gathers field data for GPS surveys by using GPS device, collecting spatial data surveys of house locations, landmarks, and road centerline tracks.
- Completes fieldwork for rural addressing by installing street signs and bridge sign numbers; assigning address numbers; and providing new subdivision layout and address numbering.
- Creates and prints various maps for different agencies, departments, and individual clients by printing or plotting different sizes of hard copy GIS maps and creating or designing new GIS base maps for printing, if needed.
Minimum Qualifications Requirements:
- High School Diploma, or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year working in GIS or a similar field, Or a combination of college coursework (math, technology, general ed) and job/work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Land Surveying or related field
- Two (2) or more years of related or similar work experience
- Bilingual (Navajo, Zuni, Spanish)
- Experience working in a local/county government environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to maintain and update a database with information from a variety of sources, such as surveys, remote sensors, and digitized maps. . . etc.
- Ability to fix inconsistent data, mapping, connectivity, and land issue.
- Ability to manage information entered into GIS database.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Skilled in database design and development
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying, mapping, usage of aerial photography and satellite imaging, and global positions systems.
Certificates and Licenses:
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License at time of employment and be insurable for liability purposes; and the ability to possess a New Mexico Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire date.
Other Requirements: The incumbent in this position must comply with the established safety guidelines of the County. Employee may be required to travel.
Conditions of Employment:
- This incumbent must pass a conditional post-offer of employment physical examination.
- This incumbent must pass a conditional post-offer of employment drug analysis test.
Working Conditions: Majority of work is performed in an office setting. Occasional fieldwork may be required. Work schedule may include irregular hours. Travel may be required. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and carrying items (books, reports, etc.) weighing up to thirty (30).
