Position: Driver Education Teacher
Reports To: Building Principal
Employment Status: Regular/Full-Time
Description: Driver Education teachers will provide theoretical and practical training and instruction to develop students’ driving abilities and ultimately train to pass the Ohio Driver License Exam. This position will provide both classroom instruction and on-road driving instruction and practice to students.
NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance
Essential Functions:
- Must complete a Driver Education Certificate of Completion program
- Bachelor's Degree along with teaching license
- Valid Driver's License
- Clean Driving Record
- Ensure safety of students
- Teach and evaluate the students using sound instructional practices
- Effectively manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain a good learning environment, disciplining students when necessary
- Prepare clear and timely lesson plans
- Provide instruction on the parts and functions of a vehicle and on-road regulations
- Teach practical skills related to al aspects of driving a vehicle
- Helping students develop confidence and control in various driving situations
- Ensuring vehicles are properly maintained and equipped for safety
- Ability to calm students who are in distress
- Inform students when they are ready to take the driver’s test
- Staying up-to-date on changes to traffic laws and regulations
- Immediately report all accidents to the principal or designee
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required
- Provide guidance to students which will promote their welfare3 and their proper educational development
- Attend parent/teacher conferences
- Distribute homework assignments
- Ensure students are learning all subject material by testing, quizzing or evaluating student projects on a regular basis
- Provide complete lesson plans for substitutes as needed
- Make provision for being available to students and parents for educationally related purposes before and after the instructional day
- Maintain and improve professional competence by attending professional growth seminary, workshops, etc.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards and conferences
- Observe ethics of the teaching profession; exhibit professional behavior, emotional stability and sound judgment
- Instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
- Assist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life and conduct
- Notify parents if student is not meeting classroom goals
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
- Demonstrate knowledge of subject matter and present clear, complete, and accurate explanations utilizing a variety of instructional techniques and media suitable to the level of learners
- Make contact with the public with tact and diplomacy
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g. home and discipline situations, medical background and family history
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as a role model for students
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent
- Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
Qualifications:
- BA or BS degree from an accredited college or university
- Hold a current teaching certificate
- Such alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate
- Knowledge of Driver Education requirements
- Current and valid ODEW teaching certificate with Driver Education endorsement
- Clean driving record
- Ability to pass the same physical examination required of bus and van drivers
Additional Working Conditions:
- Occasional requirement to travel daily and overnight
- Occasional interaction among unruly children
- Occasional exposure to blood bodily fluids and tissue
- Frequent requirements to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, crouch, kneel, climb, and stoop
- Frequent operation of a vehicle in inclement weather conditions, i.e. being prepared to come to work on all scheduled work days, including calamity days
- Weekend/evening/summer work
- Requirement to lift and/or carry up to a maximum of 50 pounds, and push/pull up to a maximum of 100 pounds, various supplies and/or equipment
