Job Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE
The athletic trainer shall coordinate coverage, treatment, and rehabilitation and physician referral for all athletic and designated U.I.L. programs.
Essential Functions
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Illness/Injury Prevention and Treatment
Supervise the work of student assistants
WORKING CONDITIONS
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including personal computer and peripherals.
Posture: Frequent sitting and standing; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching
Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; work inside and outside (exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather), exposure to noise; occasional district-wide and statewide travel; ability to transport materials/supplies to be used in presentations and in work sessions with teachers
Mental Demands: Ability to work collaboratively with the campus principal; work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress; ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); coordinate district functions; ability to problem solve, to work collaboratively with others and to work on multiple projects/tasks within a given period of time
Other: Work as a team member and with campus personnel, principals, and management; professional demeanor, resourcefulness; communicate effectively with diverse groups and accept supervision; work without day-to-day supervision; regular and punctual attendance at the workplace; must have his/her own transportation and show proof of liability

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Experience
Three years of experience as an athletic trainer
Requirements
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
Valid license from Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers
Special Knowledge/Skills
Ability to provide injury prevention and rehabilitation services
Ability to provide emergency care
Knowledge of therapeutic modalities and ability to apply appropriate treatment to treat student athletic injuries
Ability to instruct and supervise student athletes and assistants
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Illness/Injury Prevention and Treatment
- Plan and implement a comprehensive athletic injury and illness prevention program for student athletes.
- Attend practice sessions and athletic contests as assigned by Central Athletics.
- Establish and maintain effective communication with students, parents, medical and paramedical personnel, coaches, and other staff.
- Provide physical conditioning training to student athletes.
- Fit injured athletes with specialized equipment and oversee its use.
- Prepare athletes for games and practices by conducting evaluations and using tape, wraps, splints, braces, and other protective devices as needed.
- Respond to emergencies and make quick, independent judgments about how to deal with injuries.
- Identify acute injuries and provide first-aid triage, including assessing injuries and deciding whether an athlete should seek further medical attention and should discontinue participation in the athletic event.
- Establish specific procedures to be carried out by a coach or student trainer in the event of a medical emergency.
- Detect and resolve environmental risks to athletes.
- Plan and put in place a comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning program for injuries and illnesses sustained by student athletes.
- Determine therapeutic goals and objectives for individual athletes.
- Apply therapeutic modalities and instruct athletes on proper use of exercise equipment.
- Evaluate and record rehabilitation progress of athletes. Develop criteria for progression and return to practice and competition.
- Follow professional, ethical, and legal parameters regarding use of drugs and therapeutic agents for treatment and rehabilitation of injured athletes.
- Prepare lesson plans and teach courses related to the athletic training field.
- Select, train, and supervise student assistants.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents including medical, accident, and treatment records as required.
- Maintain an inventory of training supplies and equipment. Requisition additional supplies as needed.
- Care for all injuries that athletes of the school district sustain while participating in a designated U.I.L. athletic program, referral to team physician or family doctor as necessary and informing parents immediately of any injury concern.
- Have the team physician in attendance at varsity home football games.
- Keep records of all injured athletes.
- Keep file for the athletes regarding U.I.L. medical forms.
- Be available for all HOME events (7-JV) in case of emergency.
- Provide coverage for home varsity contests according to the policies of participating districts.
- Travel out-of-town with varsity football and other sports as needed.
- Order and inventory all medical supplies.
- Recruit and supervise student trainers.
- Provide visiting athletic teams with appropriate hospitality as per policies of each district.
- Organize and monitor U.I.L. required physical examinations for all athletics 6-12.
- Distribute to athletes and coaches all necessary U.I.L. medical paperwork.
- Reference Sports Medicine Policy and Procedure Manual for specific responsibilities.
- Perform other duties assigned by Director of Athletics.
