What are the responsibilities and job description for the Estimator position at McLain Site Solutions, Inc.?
We are seeking an experienced Estimator to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years of experience in estimating for site work and underground utilities projects. Proficiency in EarthWorks Excavation Software is required. The Estimator will be responsible for performing accurate takeoffs, analyzing project plans, obtaining vendor and subcontractor pricing, and preparing competitive bids.
Key Responsibilities:
Takeoff & Estimating:
- Utilize EarthWorks Excavation Software to perform detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, grading, and utilities.
- Analyze civil plans, specifications, and geotechnical reports to develop precise cost estimates.
- Identify scope discrepancies and potential project risks during the estimating process.
Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination:
- Solicit and evaluate quotes from vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors for materials, trucking, and specialty services.
- Ensure quotes align with project specifications and budget constraints.
- Develop strong relationships with suppliers and subcontractors to secure competitive pricing.
Bid Preparation & Job Costing:
- Prepare detailed cost breakdowns, including labor, equipment, materials, and overhead.
- Assist in preparing and submitting competitive bid proposals to clients and general contractors.
- Work closely with project managers and field teams to ensure estimates align with actual project execution.
- Track historical cost data to refine future estimates and improve bidding accuracy.
Collaboration & Project Support:
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits to gain insight into project conditions.
- Work closely with operations teams to ensure estimates accurately reflect real-world conditions.
- Assist with value engineering efforts to develop cost-saving alternatives for clients.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 years of estimating experience in site work, excavation, and underground utilities.
- Proficiency in EarthWorks Excavation Software is required.
- Strong understanding of grading, excavation, stormwater, water, and sewer systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, specifications, and civil engineering plans.
- Experience obtaining and analyzing vendor and subcontractor quotes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple bids under tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Agtek, HCSS HeavyBid, or similar estimating software.
- Knowledge of DOT and municipal project bidding requirements.
- Previous field experience in site work or underground utilities is a plus.
