What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineering Design Specialist - Agricultural position at McLanahan Corporation?
Design the best systems, processes and equipment to satisfy the requirements of potential and/or existing customers while adhering to acceptable engineering and McLanahan standards.
Essential Functions/Key Accountabilities:
- Follow direction provided by Engineering Director.
- Maintain a safe working environment by adhering to, and enforcing, all safety procedures and policies inside and outside the facility, including use of personal protective and McLanahan equipment as required.
- Represent McLanahan Corporation in a positive manner both internally and externally (customers, trade shows, conferences, etc.) while adhering to the organization’s core values.
- Communicate effectively with co-workers, management, customers, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
- Review customer source control drawings, specification control drawings and other applicable specifications to determine requirements and/or feasibility of the process, system, and/or component.
- Perform preliminary calculations such as stress analysis, performance analysis, risk/hazard analysis and pressure drop and flow analysis, etc. as required.
- Participate in engineering and general design reviews as required.
- Assist with the preparation of proposal documentation, technical data such as qualification test procedures, acceptance test procedures, reports, manuals, etc.
- Communicate with customers concerning design proposals or existing designs.
- Communicate with internal groups including purchasing, quality control, sales, accounting, metal finishing, and assembly.
- Communicate and meet with vendors concerning parts they supply or propose to supply.
- Perform liaison function between Engineering and all manufacturing operations for any related issues, problems or improvements.
- Confer with Project Manager and others on staff to resolve design problems.
- Keep supervisor advised of work status, workload, problems, and progress as related to work assignments.
- Use computer assisted drafting equipment and software to create new or make revisions to current drawings.
- Oversee the fabrication and assembly of equipment and be available for questions from the shop floor regarding prints and other specifications called out.
- Travel to customer sites to gather information regarding system layouts and designs, do site inspections during and post-install, and provide follow-up support after install.
- Travel to job sites as required to commission, start-up, trouble-shoot, inspect, repair, and assess equipment, including electrical, mechanical and hydraulic systems and ultimately use this field knowledge to assist in the continuous improvement of the system, process and equipment.
Education/Qualifications/Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or other equivalent trainings.
- Up to five years of experience, preferably in the agricultural and/or dairy industry.
- PE licensure preferred
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD or other CAD programs.
- Experience performing analysis, including stress, performance, and risk/hazard.

- Computer literacy including MS Office applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
- Ability to successfully reach company goals in an environment in which a wide degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Physical Requirements:
This position is typically located in an office setting and requires sitting and standing for long periods of time. The position requires ambulatory skills sufficient to travel domestically. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, visual acuity to use a keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to express or exchange ideas by means of both oral and written communication.
