We have an exciting opportunity for a Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) Subsystem Manager (CLDP and ISS) to join our JETS II contract team at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX.

If selected you will:

  • Support both the Commercial Low-Earth Orbit Destinations Program (CLDP) and the International Space Station (ISS).
  • 50% CLDP ECLS Support - The CLDP Team Member will:
  • Provide general support for CLDP ECLS activities across multiple providers (working in a local ECLS team of ~5 individuals)
  • Develop into the role of CLDP lead for the Axiom commercial provider
  • Provide system-level evaluation of commercial vehicle architecture, providing ISS ECLS data sharing/transfer, providing ISS ECLS lessons learned, developing/implementing requirements, supporting verification event review, etc. throughout the development lifecycle of these vehicles.
  • Coordinate insight and transfer of NASA-controlled ECLS data, design information, knowledge capture and lessons learned to facilitate CLDP concept development
  • Engage in NASA-owned requirements development and implementation to support future NASA astronaut usage of the CLDP facilities
  • Assess and understand engineering drawings and sketches, test reports and analyses
  • Understand and utilize commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures for ECLSS hardware
  • Handle communications between various stakeholders (commercial providers, hardware providers, sustainers, JSC Engineering, Health and Human Performance, Safety & Mission Assurance, ISS and CLDP, etc.) - Perform other duties as required.

  • 50% ISS Temperature & Humidity Control Subsystem Manager will:
  • Serve as the primary ISS ECLS Temperature & Humidity Control (THC) Subsystem Manager. This involves all aspects of THC hardware and associated ground/development/on-orbit activities/operations. Primarily this involves Boeing and subcontractor CFE hardware but also has aspects which are GFE (JSC or MSFC provided) or IP related (Energia or ESA).
  • Work closely with ISS Program Vehicle Office Integrators, Boeing contractor subsystem teams, various project/hardware provider teams and other organizations to manage tasks and technical risks
  • Assume full oversight responsibility (with delegated authority but under the direction of the NASA ECLS System Manager) for all engineering and operations decisions for the THC subsystem
  • Support real time system operations, including periodic support in the ISS Mission Evaluation Room (MER) for specific on-orbit activities
  • Support problem/failure resolution activities and resolution through various forums such as the ECLS SPRT and appropriate ISS Program boards
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Create and manage flight manifest requests (launch, return and disposal) for cargo packaging and planned consumables for a subset of ECLS subsystems on ISS
  • Perform other duties as required.


Qualifications:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • Typically requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in Engineering and normally possess 5-10 years of related experience. License and certification may be required.
  • A working knowledge of, and experience with, Space Vehicle flight operations, documentation, processes, and Program operation, particularly from an ISS perspective.
  • An understanding/exposure to ECLS hardware and functionality (Highly Desired)
  • A working knowledge of mechanical, fluid and pressure-based systems
  • Ability to coordinate across multiple organizations
  • Strong and clear communication skills, both technical and interpersonal, involving complex topics and real-time discussion/decision-making


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A working knowledge of ISS or general space ventilation systems and hardware and/or ground based air conditioning systems
  • Knowledge of hardware certification and flight processes
  • Experience with ISS visiting vehicles
  • Be familiar with system/subsystem management roles
  • A strong working knowledge of the ISS Program (or similar NASA program), including use of boards/technical forums and support of space flight hardware activities.
