What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tug Captain position at McLean Contracting Company?
McLean Contracting Company is seeking an experienced Tugboat Captain to join our team in Galesville, MD. Preferred candidates will have 5 years of relative experience, with 50 GRT Master of Towing license or greater. Exciting opportunity to enjoy a traditional work schedule, with most nights and weekends off, plus paid holidays and vacation.
Essential Duties
Safely operates vessels, must have valid U. S. Coast Guard “Master of Towing Vessels”, radar observer, valid medical card and Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
Possesses the skills necessary to maintain control of the vessel while backing up, turning corners and negotiating narrow passageways, etc.
Substantive knowledge of the U. S. Coast Guard “Rules of the Road” and perform the duties in accordance with those rules and regulations.
Ensures that loads are property distributed, secured and within maximum height, width and weight limitations.
Ensures that the barge (tow) is in trim and safe to move.
Maintains daily logs, file reports as required by Government regulations, perform regular maintenance and inspection of vessel, and reports all incidents.
Performs or assists mechanics in repair.
Has thorough knowledge of the safe and proper methods for towing and mooring other vessels.
Reads and understands charts, radar, GPS, compasses and other navigational devices.

Qualification
- High school diploma/GED/Trade School preferred
- Master of Towing, 50 GRT or greater
- Ability to pass physical screenings
