The Equipment Operator is a part of the Road and Bridge team. This team is responsible for construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the county that are not part of the state highway system or with a municipality. The Equipment Operator performs specialized skilled work in the operation of one or more types of motorized heavy equipment used in the maintenance and construction of roads and bridges.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Operates heavy equipment and machinery by using front-end loader, motor-grader, back hoe, brush cutter, tractor w/shredder, chipper, distributor truck. Removes brush and weeds from roadsides. Repairs pot holes and other road construction Operates pick-ups and dump trucks in hauling dirt, gravel, sand, rock and pea gravelVerifies equipment and materials are in place for road surfacingPerforms equipment inspections to ensure proper function; washes equipment as necessaryPerforms routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipmentWorks with road maintenance crews as assigned by Foreman Works with general contractors with the assistance of county employees in the repairing and inspecting of bridges along with performing general tasks such as shoveling, carrying lumber, and nailing for bridge repairOrganizes, installs, monitors, and repairs County road signs as neededPerforms all work in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, County and department policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safetyPerforms traffic control such as flagging, setting barricades and cones, hauling equipment and is on-call for flood control during stormsRegular attendance and timeliness are required LIMITATIONS AND DISCLAIMER: The above job description is meant to describe the general nature and level of work being performed; it is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required for the position.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Works mostly outdoors. Exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, humidity, wetness, hazardous chemicals, insects, dust, poisonous plants, unpleasant smells, fumes, traffic hazards, and physical stress from exertion. Some incumbents may have contact with buried electric, phone, or television cable lines. This position follows DOT guidelines. PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stoop, bend, push and pull. May have to lift heavy boxes or objects up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Exposure to extreme heat and cold.Ability to see and hear hazards associated with the operation of construction equipment.Stand for long periods of time.Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Repetitive movements.HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: This position may be required to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the facility. The position schedule is 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday.
