Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Incumbent drives on surface streets and operates equipment on unpaved surfaces to diagnose mechanical problems; works around machinery and equipment; and risks exposure to traffic hazards, electrical currents, adverse weather conditions, temperature and noise extremes, wetness, humidity, heights, fumes, dusts, odors, solvents, grease/oil, skin irritants, toxic or caustic chemicals, vibration.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:

- Analyzes various engine equipment.
- Repairs / maintains automobiles and other mechanical equipment.
- Operates precinct vehicles as needed (i.e. front end loader, motorgrader)
- Diagnoses engine trouble codes.
- Troubleshoots electrical circuits.
- Rebuilds various component parts.
- Performs flat repairs, mounting, balancing, and tire rotations.
- Perform highly skilled and complex mechanical repairs on both light and heavy equipment such as trucks, loaders, rollers, graders, bulldozers, gradalls, and tractors.
- Inspect equipment, analyze trouble and plan sequence of repair operations.
- Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrications, and tune-ups.
- Performs all work in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, County and department policies and procedures, and standards of quality and safety.
- Diagnose mechanical defects accurately and make necessary repairs to equipment in a timely manner.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisors and equipment operators
- Regular attendance and timeliness is required
- Must be organized and mindful of the shop, tools, and equipment.

- High School Diploma or GED
- Or 4 years in mechanics or related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Preferred
- Graduation from a trade / mechanical school
- 3 years’ experience in automotive diagnostics, repairs and services.
- Must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s license (CDL).
- Evidence of automotive /ASE Certification a plus.
- Skill in the use of a variety of hand tools.
- Skill in the use of mechanized tools, jacks, and hoists.
- Skill in the use of a variety of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment.
- Ability to diagnose and repair a wide variety of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions.
- Ability to read manuals and schematics (both electrical and hydraulic).
