Job Overview
The Director of Estimating will lead and manage a geographically diverse team of estimators, overseeing both on-site and remote employees to grow and develop a high-performing, process-driven estimating department. This role requires a deep understanding of estimating practices within the construction industry, with a particular focus on flooring, countertops, and window blinds. The successful candidate will bring a strong background in process development, optimization, and enforcement, along with exceptional leadership and team development skills. With a focus on consistency, efficiency, and accuracy, this role will drive performance enhancement and ensure compliance with company standards across all locations and in multiple market segments including multifamily, hospitality, senior living, commercial and higher education.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Team Development :
- Recruit, mentor, and develop a team of skilled estimators, providing ongoing support and training to enhance their skills and ensure high performance.
- Establish clear performance objectives and conduct regular performance reviews to ensure team goals align with company objectives.
- Foster a positive, collaborative work environment that encourages innovation and continuous improvement.
Process Development and Optimization :
Design and implement standard operating procedures for estimating processes, with a focus on accuracy, efficiency, and consistency across projects.Develop strategies to streamline workflows, reduce estimating cycle times, and improve bid accuracy.Conduct regular reviews of estimating methodologies and adjust based on industry best practices, client preferences and project feedback.Project Estimation and Bid Management :
Oversee the preparation of detailed and competitive bids for flooring, countertops, and window blinds projects, ensuring all estimates are accurate, thorough, and align with client requirements.Review and approve estimates and bids prepared by the team, providing final sign-off before submission.Collaborate with project managers, sales teams, and clients to align project specifications and ensure successful project execution.Cost Control and Budgeting :
Work closely with pricing / procurement teams to ensure accurate and up-to-date material cost data is used in estimates.Work closely with project management and field operations to ensure accurate labor is used in estimates.Quality Assurance and Procedure Enforcement :
Ensure strict adherence to company standards and industry regulations in all estimating activities.Conduct periodic audits to verify that estimating processes are followed accurately and identify areas for improvement.Performance Enhancement and Metrics Management :
Develop KPIs and other metrics to monitor estimating team performance, individual productivity, bid success rates and most importantly, profitability.Analyze historical data and project outcomes to identify trends, assess estimator effectiveness, and implement enhancements as needed.Qualifications
Education : Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
Experience : Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in estimating within the construction industry, with a focus on flooring, countertops, and window blinds.
Skills :
Strong background in process development, process optimization, and standard operating procedure (SOP) implementation.Excellent leadership and team-building skills, with proven experience in managing and growing a team in a very hands-on manner.Management of employees across multiple states, including remote emplAdvanced analytical skills, with a keen attention to detail and a strong emphasis on accuracy.Extremely organizedFunctions comfortably with a sense of urgency and a possesses a strong desire to differentiate the company from the competition.Make decisions with discernment, looking at the big picture with consideration to all constituentsProficiency in construction estimating software and tools, such as RFMS Bluebeam or similar combined with strong understanding of MS Excel and Adobe.Solid knowledge of construction costs, materials, labor rates, and project timelines.Effective communication skills, with the ability to interface well with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders.Preferred Qualifications
Advanced certification in estimating or project management (such as Certified Professional Estimator).Experience with process improvement methodologies.Strong understanding of industry standards and trends in flooring, countertops, and window treatments.Employment Type : Full Time
