Job Summary : The Lab Assistant will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory. Each day the Laboratory Assistant will be assigned specific areas of responsibility within the scope of the job. In addition to performing the duties of a phlebotomist the Laboratory Assistant will :
- Assist the Technical Staff in the lab by performing CLIA waived testing.
- Preparing and loading specimens on the analyzers. Additional laboratory tasks will depend on the individual meeting the CLIA regulations to perform testing.
- Register outpatients and client samples in the electronic medical record.
- Assist with the preparation of test samples that are sent out to reference laboratories.
Essential Accountabilities
Perform venous access procedures (venipunctures) on infants, pediatrics and adult patients using a standard needle and syringe, as well as a multi-tube needle holder.Perform capillary access procedures (fingerstick or heel stick) on infant, pediatrics, and adult patients whether for direct testing of the sample (CoaguChek XS) or into a blood collection tube.Ensure the patient’s sample meets the specimen requirements for all tests collected, sufficient volume for testing, the correct collection tube used, insuring proper dilution factor for anticoagulated specimens.Understands proper specimen handling.Communicate with and assist patients in a professional and courteous manner.Review the laboratory schedule to verify and complete orders. Identify the patient and confirm the correct patient record. Monitor and resolve orders in the electronic medical record.Enter patient demographics, tests performed and diagnoses correlating to tests performed in the EHR.Stock the phlebotomy trays and draw rooms during and at the end of the shift.Clean and maintain the laboratory, including equipment.Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following policies and procedures, complying with legal and federal regulations.Must be comfortable with fast paced work environment and able to multitask.Strong attention to detail.13.Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated through interactions with fellow team members throughout the facility, providers, and management.Demonstrates care, compassion, and pride in performing tasks.Exercise independent judgment and can work under minimal supervision.Perform other duties as assigned.Competencies

Minimum High school diploma or GEDPhlebotomy ASCP or AMT preferred, but not requiredExperience
