JOB SUMMARY:  Provide MLT/Phlebotomist services for the Claremore Indian Hospital.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

• Identifies patients for whom lab draws are ordered by name and date of birth in compliance with Joint Commission requirements.
• Have 1 year of experience and be competent in performing phlebotomies for all age groups including neonatal and geriatric patients.
• Completes all IHS mandatory trainings by the set due dates.
• Maintains laboratory stock, keeps phlebotomy area clean and organized.
• The contractor shall notify the laboratory oversight or designated representative no later than 2 hours before shift if unable to work during scheduled hours.
• Utilizes the Electronic Health Record to review the laboratory draw orders for the patient once properly identified.
• Accessions the patient test order in RPMS Lab Package.
• Obtains specimens as required within scope of duty to include the performance of venipuncture and capillary draw. Selects appropriate tube types for requested test procedures.
• Labels all samples in front of the patient in compliance with Joint Commission guidelines with patient name, date of birth, date/time of patient sample collection, and phlebotomist initials.
• Properly packages the samples obtained in biohazard transport bags for courier to the laboratory department for specimen processing.
• Transports all specimen types collected in the medical clinic environment to the laboratory department for processing including but not limited to cultures and urine samples.
• Maintains phlebotomy draw tray stock to ensure that all required items for successful in room phlebotomy are available at all times.
• Performs prescribed waived testing for the site location and alerts a Clinical Laboratory Scientist to reports results in the RPMS Lab Package.
• Troubleshoots unusual or unexpected patient results, repeating patient testing as required. Defers to Clinical Laboratory Scientist for review of resolution actions.  
• Clerical Support:
  • Provide clerical support and apply proficiency in the use of general office equipment such as personal computers; telephone, copier, shredder and fax machine.
  • Assists in accreditation preparation and GPRA.
  • Assists in department, facility and Service Unit JC activities as assigned.
  • Supports and promotes the department, facility and IHS’ vision and mission objectives.
  • Participates in all required HIPAA functions.
  • Attends required facility and department in-service and training. Responds correctly to all safety codes (mock or real).
