Staunton City Schools, located in historic Staunton, Virginia in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, is seeking highly qualified applicants for a Principal position at T.C. McSwain Elementary School for the 2025-26 academic school year

 

 

240 Day (12-month) Contract beginning July 1, 2025.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Must hold a Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement in Administrative Leadership PreK-12 or equivalent endorsement, plus three years of elementary school level teaching and leadership/supervisory experience, or equivalent experience.  Experience working in a school with a diverse student population which has successfully addressed achievement challenges is essential.  Prior experiences in impacting student achievement and/or results for a school in improvement must be evident.

JOB TITLE: Elementary School Principal

 

LOCATION: Elementary Schools

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Division Superintendent

 

GRADE/RANK: 2432

 

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

 

SUMMARY:

 

Position is responsible for the daily operation and administration of an assigned elementary school. The elementary principal is expected to:

  • Lead by establishing a culture for continuous improvement;
  • Focus all efforts to promote student achievement, advancement and youth development;
  • Develop staff to promote employee expertise and;
  • Monitor by implementing a system to determine performance and progress.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

As an Instructional Leader in Staunton City Schools, the elementary school principal fosters the success of all students by:

  • Facilitating the development, communication, implementation and evaluation of a shared vision of teaching and learning that leads to student academic success;
  • Developing, advocating, and sustaining an academically rigorous, positive, and safe school climate for all stakeholders;
  • Using data to make instructional decisions within the school;
  • Managing human resources effectively by assisting with selection and induction, and by supporting, evaluating and retaining quality instructional and support personnel;
  • Supporting, managing, and overseeing the school’s organization, operation, and use of resources;
  • Communicating and collaborating effectively with stakeholders;
  • Demonstrating professional standards and ethics, engaging in continuous professional development, and contributing to the profession;
  • Exercising leadership which results in measurable student academic progress based on established standards and;
  • Modeling nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

 Other Duties:

  • Stays informed of developments and research pertaining to effective schools.
  • Actively evaluates existing programs and practices and seeks creative ideas to consider and implement for continuous improvement.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Division Superintendent.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

 

Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of the current issues, principles, and practices in public elementary school education and the ability to apply them to the needs of a school. Must possess knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development, instructional practices, and interpretation of test data. Must possess the ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of an elementary school. Must possess the ability to plan and supervise the work of others. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: school office, classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular contact with special needs children is necessary. Regular contact with staff members, students, parents, and community members is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.
