Front End Loader and Rotochopper Operator

McVantage Packaging specializes in manufacturing, repairing, and recycling wooden pallets and crates servicing the Central-Southeastern U.S. from our plants in Tuscumbia, AL and Nashville, TN. Our Tuscumbia operation includes a scragg mill and various production stations for the manufacture and reprocessing of our lumber products and packaging product components. Both the Nashville and Tuscumbia operations are then able to assemble those products into our pallets, crates, and other products.
The Front-End Loader and Rotochopper Operator is a key position at McVantage Packaging’s Tuscumbia location. This role involves operating a front-end loader to manage sawdust, load, and operate a Rotochopper to process material, and maintaining the work area by manually removing sawdust when necessary.
Key Responsibilities
Basic Operator
Material Handling:
- Operate a front-end loader to transport sawdust and other wood materials efficiently and safely.
- Load the Rotochopper with wood waste or other feedstock according to production requirements.
Equipment Operation:
- Operate the Rotochopper to grind wood waste, ensuring efficient operation and output.
- Monitor equipment performance and report any malfunctions or maintenance needs promptly.
Work Area Maintenance:
- Use a hand shovel to clear sawdust and other debris from around the Rotochopper and adjacent areas.
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace to ensure operational safety and efficiency.
Load Sawdust and Wood Waste in Trucks.
Use the front-end loader to load sawdust and other wood waste into trucks.
Safety Compliance:
- Follow all safety guidelines for operating heavy equipment and working in a production environment.
- Use provided personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Other Duties:
- Assist with other production tasks as directed by the supervisor.
Level 2 Operator
Machine Setup and Inspection:
- Set up controls of the Rotochopper.
- Complete daily safety and maintenance inspection on the front-end loader and Rotochopper.
Master Operator:
Basic Preventative Maintenance:
- Perform basic preventative maintenance on the front-end loader and Rotochopper.
Essential Job Functions

Heavy Equipment Operation:

Level 2 Operator
Machine Setup and Inspections.

- Why It’s Important: A properly set up machine runs more efficiently and keeps the machine in operating condition for longer.
- Skills Needed: Basic mechanical abilities and attention to detail.
Master Operator
Preventative Maintenance:
- What You Do: Perform basic preventative maintenance at predetermined intervals.
- Why It’s Important: Preventative maintenance reduces downtime and increases the life of the machine.
- Skills Needed: Intermediate mechanical ability, attention to detail, reading and writing, ability to use a smart phone, and communication.
Required Qualifications for Basic Operator.
To be considered for each additional level up, the individual must demonstrate the ability to execute the essential functions of that level fully.
Education:
- No formal education required.
Experience:
- Experience operating heavy machinery (e.g., front-end loader) is preferred but not required; on-the-job training will be provided.
Skills:
- Basic mechanical aptitude.
- Strong attention to detail and safety.
Certifications:
- None required, though equipment operation certifications are a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a manufacturing or wood products environment.
- Familiarity with production equipment like Rotochoppers.
Physical Demands
- Ability to sit, stand, and operate equipment for extended periods.
- Frequent lifting of materials up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in a dusty environment and handle manual tasks.
Work Environment
- The work area may be noisy and dusty due to machinery and sawdust.
- Appropriate PPE such as gloves, safety glasses, and dust masks will be provided.
