Nurse Manager - Main Operating Room (OR)

Perioperative Services strives to be the safest perioperative environment in the world, to have the highest quality of perioperative outcomes, and to demonstrate the core values in our vision. Partnered with the Division of Nursing, Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and the Division of Surgery, this multidisciplinary team performs more than 20,000 surgical cases each year in more than 36 operating rooms in the Main Building. The population served includes both adult and pediatric oncology patients.

Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate for the Nurse Manager position in the Main OR Nursing will have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Five years of recent RN experience, including one year of supervisory experience in direct patient care activities
  • Experience in OR as a charge nurse

Essential Job Functions

  • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate individualized nursing care, nursing care management, and nursing personnel management for a designated area.
  • Manage nursing administration, identifying the purpose and goals of nursing services and nursing education.
  • Coordinate staffing and manage budget preparation to ensure adequate personnel, supplies, and equipment.
  • Counsel and evaluate nursing personnel for optimum performance.
  • Develop and participate in orientation and in-service education programs.
  • Collaborate with faculty and assist in respective areas.

Transformational Leadership:

  • Lead and develop staff to meet the demands of future healthcare needs.
  • Implement and monitor unit budgets to respond cost-effectively to changing patient, staff, and multidisciplinary team requirements.
  • Assist in preparation and delivery of unit staffing plans considering skill mix, staff, and patient care requirements.
  • Ensure continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, patient education, and coordination of services.
  • Practice with autonomy within the scope of professional nursing.

Structural Empowerment

  • Empower staff to problem-solve and meet organizational and unit goals.
  • Manage human resource activities including recruitment, retention, supervision, evaluation, and productivity.
  • Participate in identifying, recruiting, developing, and retaining top talent.
  • Engage in shared governance models at unit and institutional levels.
  • Develop strong relationships and partnerships to improve patient outcomes.

Exemplary Professional Practice

  • Train, coach, and assist team members to ensure optimum patient care.
  • Manage and provide patient care in assigned areas.
  • Function in various roles including charge nurse, clinical coach, and preceptor.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency and compassion in patient care.
  • Assess patient needs and collaborate with healthcare teams for optimal outcomes.

  • Support the integration of innovation and research-based findings into daily patient care practices.
  • Participate in and lead unit, divisional, and institutional improvement projects.
  • Promote innovative solutions and encourage others to innovate.
  • Lead evidence-based practice projects and participate in the redesign of care delivery.

Empirical Quality Results

  • Promote problem-solving rather than workarounds.
  • Assume leadership in managing service quality at unit and organizational levels.
  • Ensure integration of safety and quality standards into practice.
  • Recognize and act to prevent at-risk behavior.
  • Troubleshoot process issues and equipment conflicts.
  • Collaborate on quality and performance improvement efforts.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree in Nursing.

Preferred: Master's degree in Nursing or related field.

Experience

Required: Five years of professional nursing experience, to include one year of supervisory experience in direct patient care activities.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

Required: Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

Preferred: American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification as required by patient care area.
