Summary
The Principal Research Scientist will be responsible for managing the lab staff in basic and translational research projects including planning, conducting, and overseeing experiments while ensuring laboratory safety, research compliance, maintenance of research protocols and records, and maintaining laboratory equipment and research spaces.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Basic Science Research
In Collaboration With The Principal Investigator
Manage and train laboratory personnel to lead the basic and translational scientific projects in the lab.
Read and evaluate new publications and attend scientific meetings to guide project strategy.
Designs, develops, and implements experiments and projects.
Direct and manage concurrent nonhuman primate experiments aimed at defining viral and immune responses overall, including data analysis, presentation and redaction of manuscripts.
Utilize initiative and inventive skills in planning and executing the details of experiments.
Presents findings of research projects to professional groups and prepares manuscripts and scientific documents.
Functions in an independent manner in the design and initiation of research experiments.
Prepares preliminary data and drafts documents for grant applications.
Regulatory Compliance/Safe Laboratory Practices
Complies with institutional, regulatory agencies and national guidelines.
Supervises inspection of all areas where hazardous materials are used or stored.
Assists in developing standard operating procedures for receiving, storing, use and disposal of hazardous materials.
Implements and ensures lab safety procedures.
Maintains equipment inventory and maintenance.
Uses laboratory knowledge and expertise to identify and resolve research laboratory operational issues and interacts with all levels of internal and external sources to resolve problems.
Research Recordkeeping
Document experimental work; maintain clear and accurate records of laboratory data, both written and electronic, accessible at all times.
Record keeping and data maintenance to meet PI, department/institute directives.
Records experimental data utilizing the Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN).
Collects and accurately calculate experimental data under the guidance of PI.
Prepares graphs and charts by using computer.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.
Experience: Five years of experience in experimental or scientific work.
Preferred Experience: Expertise in viral and immune assays specific to nonhuman primate models. Experience in histotechnology desired.
