Nursing Informatics Specialist opportunity in Nursing Administration

Ideal candidate must have a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. Five years of clinical nursing experience to include two years of clinical informatics. Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification and recent Informatics Resource Nurse experience. Have exposure to quality efforts/participating in a local level. Have working knowledge/training on quality and analytics tools, familiar with Excel and experience in Epic System is preferred. This position will require flexibility to work evening, nights and weekends when needed.

SUMMARY:

The primary purpose of the Nursing Informatics Specialist is to serve as an independent practitioner in their assigned area (inpatient/EC, OR, Ambulatory, Data Governance) and in collaboration with the Nursing Informatics leaders. This individual will collaborate and engage with front line nurses and leaders at all levels of the organization, inpatient and outpatient, covering all aspects of health information technology.

The Nursing Informatics Specialist will review all aspects of health information technology as it relates to usability for the front line nurses. The individuals will function across specialty areas as needed to promote an integrated system for gathering information, documenting information, and gathering cumulative data elements.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

Relationship Management and Work Design

Relationship Management: Clinical Nursing Informatics Specialist, Nursing Programs, Informatics initiates, develops, and manages trusting, collaborative relationships across disciplines and continuums of care.
a. Coaches and mentors subject matter experts to be stewards for all health information technology related activities; offers constructive feedback in a timely and professional manner.
b. Contributes to the development of education plans and accountable to facilitate implementation of education plans to support nurses in serving as subject matter experts in the area of nursing informatics.
c. Collaborates and partners with Associate Directors, Nursing Programs, Informatics along with the Information Systems staff in the analysis, planning, design, development, and implementation of health information technology components.
d. Establishes a rapport with members of the interdisciplinary team (Staff, peers, physicians, ancillary support, and others) to gain trust and understanding of key stakeholder needs.
e. Delivers unfavorable news in a manner that maintains credibility.
f. Promotes, encourages, and coaches staff in the use of current technology as a basis for patient care delivery.

Work Design: Nursing Informatics Specialist, Nursing Programs, Informatics maintains current knowledge of clinical work flow to integrate technology and innovations in patient care delivery.
a. Maintains visibility to all assigned units to include frequent daily rounds in patient care areas; engaging in discussions and making observations of patient care delivery to stay abreast of current work flow processes.
b. Facilitates focus groups with subject matter experts and key stakeholders to gain understanding of clinical work flow and customer needs; in collaboration with the Associate Director, Nursing Programs, Informatics, evaluates and identifies available systems and technology in an attempt to address concerns.
c. Advocates for nursing practice when information technology may have negative downstream effects on work flow; communicates opposing viewpoints in a professional manner.
d. Articulates information system functionality in patient care delivery; identifies pros and cons to various health IT systems to reach informed decisions.
e. Serves as change agent when patient care work/workflow is redesigned.

Evaluates Electronic Health Record Analysis

Systems Thinking: Nursing Informatics Specialist, Nursing Programs, Informatics assists the Associate Director, Nursing Programs, Informatics in the evaluation of the electronic health record for planning, development, and other related factors in consideration of organizational impact.
a. Approaches informatics development and utilization within the scope of nursing practice and beyond; considers impact of nursing documentation processes in relation to interdisciplinary provision of care.
b. Assesses information systems to support nursing practice across the continuum of care.
c. Collaborates with Associate Director, Nursing Programs, Information when considering human resource allocation and financial funding sources pertaining to planning of health IT implementation strategies.
d. Actively participates in, assists and/or leads unit, divisional and/or institutional information technology related projects

Information Management and Technology

Change Management: Nursing Informatics Specialist, Nursing Programs, Informatics serves as a change agent for health information technology activities; provides effective communication to assist end users in understanding the importance and implication of new or revised processes in the utilization of electronic health records and related technology.
a. Provides reason, rationale, resources, and roadmap for implementation of new processes and initiatives for frontline nurses. These resources are developed in collaboration with the Associate Director, Nursing Programs, Informatics as well as other key information technology staff.
b. Maintains written and oral lines of communication sharing information with frontline nurses, nursing leaders, Nursing Practice Congress (as designated by Associate Director, Nursing Programs, Informatics), SME forums and meetings, Nursing News & Information, staff meetings, development of team huddles, and email.
c. Applies situational leadership skills to adapt to opposing viewpoints in response to given change from frontline staff and leaders.
d. Supports clinical staff during periods of transitions serving in an at the elbow resource capacity for utilization of information technology at the point of care.

Information Management & Technology: Clinical Nursing Informatics Specialist, Nursing Programs demonstrates proficient knowledge of clinical information systems used in the delivery of care; monitors information technology metrics in the practice environment.
a. Monitors, audits, and reports metrics for nursing documentation as delegated.
b. Along with Associate Director, Nursing Programs, Informatics, collaborates with Information Systems and vendors during analysis, planning, implementation, and development of information technology at the point of care.
c. In collaboration with Associate Director, Nursing Programs, Informatics, ensures staff involvement in appropriate stage of information technology analysis, planning, implementation, and development.
d. Maintains current knowledge of information systems and innovations
e. Participates in the review and revision of policies involving information technology and nursing practice.
