Tooling Manager
PURPOSE This job description is built with the intent of describing the core competencies and requirements of the position.
SUMMARY This is a management position that requires a general understanding of management of people and processes. Continuous Improvement and organizational skills are the keys to success. The work is often hands-on, interacting with shop floor personnel, tool & die designers, toolmakers, Quality, Production, and Maintenance to ensure the most effective plans are created and implemented.
JOB DESCRIPTION
- General knowledge of machine tooling, cutter, drills, and inspection tools.
- Providing the estimating / sales department with tooling and fixture estimates.
- Provide technical support to tool & die designers and toolmakers, as well as all operating areas utilizing tooling products.
- Mentor employees by sharing technical expertise and providing feedback and guidance.
- Work with tool & die designer in development of most efficient and cost-effective tool designs to meet customer specifications.
- Attend and participate in organizational meetings within the company and with customers when appropriate.
- Assist Production in troubleshooting activities at the machine / process to solve unforeseen manufacturing challenges.
- Willing to participate in tooling / production meetings to develop production processes.
- Offer technical support and expertise to Sales, Purchasing, and Production activities.
- Lead or participate in pre-tool build meetings to uncover and address any potential design and / or build issues and post-tool build meetings to review aspects of the build that worked particularly well or poorly to develop best practices for future tool builds.
- Management of internal jobs in the tooling department.
- Develop and implement procedures, work instructions, and continuous improvement planning.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
- And all other duties as required in this position.
