Emergency Substitute Teacher

 

 

To become a Mead School District Emergency Substitute Teacher you must have a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree, be willing to complete substitute teacher training and obtain an Emergency Substitute Certificate from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. The Emergency Substitute Certificate enables someone who is not fully qualified for a regular teaching certificate to serve as a substitute teacher. The certificate is valid for up to two years. Emergency Substitutes work on an on-call basis.

Job Summary:

Facilitate student success in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing District approved curriculum and providing a safe and optimal learning environment.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Instruct students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through defined instruction from teacher/building.
  • Communicate progress of students with classroom teacher for the purpose of supporting learning.
  • Assist other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum.
  • Collaborate with school personnel for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes
  • Direct instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Monitor student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.
  • Instruct assigned classes in the location and at the time designated.
  • Follow lesson plans explicitly.
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree in any subject.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain a Washington State Emergency Substitute Teaching Certificate upon hire.
  • Complete required substitute training.

Essential Criteria:

  • Skill to motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance.
  • Knowledge of age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code.
  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods, perform a variety of specialized tasks, maintain records, establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, parents and other school personnel, meet schedules and deadlines. Physical abilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handing, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/color vision/field of vision.

  3. Transcripts (unofficial copies are acceptable) **Order your official transcripts. You may upload unofficial transcripts to the application for review, but official transcripts must be attached to the Emergency Substitute Teacher OSPI application.
  4. A minimum of three (3) listed references with email addresses.  
  5. The Sub Services Coordinator will review your application and contact you to set up an interview with the Human Resources Department.
  6. If, following your interview, you are approved, the Sub Services Coordinator will provide you with additional employment information/documents including directions on how to apply for your Emergency Substitute Teacher Certificate with OSPI. 
  7. Once you receive your Emergency Substitute Teacher Certificate from OSPI, and return completed District paperwork, you will be ready for substitute teaching assignments.

 Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed before employment commences. The successful candidate for this position must be fingerprinted. Employment is contingent upon clearance by the Washington State Patrol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The Salary Range for an Emergency Substitute Teacher is Min $77.50 per half day – Max $155.00 per day. Substitutes will accrue 1 hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked.  Substitutes who work 630 hours will become benefit eligible for the remainder of the school year.  Standard benefits include: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance and Long-Term Disability.
