Travel Camp Counselor
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Meadowlands Area YMCA is a rapidly growing and progressive association that is looking for individuals who can positively contribute to our summer camp team.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Provide direct supervision of a group of children in a Camp environment and Offsite on various Field Trips. Provide a quality experience to children while focusing on the YMCA core values of honesty, respect, responsibility and caring. All staff must be able to successfully complete background check and obtain all certification courses and trainings required and provided by the Meadowlands Area YMCA. Must be able to be on a school bus for 1-2 hours a day.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must have High School Diploma/GED if over the age of 18
- Must have some experience in childcare, including basic knowledge of child development and positive discipline techniques
- Must be able to lead a group of 10-20 students in activities ensuring physical and emotional safety
- Excellent listening and communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks
- Reliable individual
- Must be able to ride on School Bus for 1-2 hours a day
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in the implementation of daily programs and trips under the direction of the Camp Director or Supervisory Staff.
- Assist in providing a safe and supportive environment for all children
- Assist in keeping accurate documentation of attendance and lesson plans.
- Assist in practicing emergency procedures
- Assist in all general housekeeping tasks. To be responsible for the management and supervision of children at all times, including activity and trip location areas.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of activities appropriate to children's needs and interests.
- Assist in the preservation of all program supplies and equipment.
- Assist with ensuring proper sign in/sign out procedures are followed.
- Attend all mandatory camp staff trainings
- Keep certifications current in CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens while receiving necessary and required training in Child Abuse Prevention and other required courses.
- To be able to constantly stand, walk, bend, run, stoop, kneel, crawl, crouch, pushing or pulling, some climbing and balancing as well as lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs.
- To attend to each child's interest and programs needs and support children's emotional and social development, encouraging understanding of others and positive self-concepts.
- To have an active and open line of communication with Camp Director, sharing information on their child and any other important issues.
- Be knowledgeable and follow the Policies and Procedures outlined in the Staff Handbook and Parent Handbook.
- Wear the approved YMCA work attire and name tags. Notify the Camp Director if in need of a name tag or YMCA staff shirt. Should arrive at program 5 minutes before the program starts.
- Assist in the Key Leaders and Directors with getting children ready for bus travel.
- Providing care and supervision offsite while on various field trips.
- Making sure offsite location is kept clean and tidy.
- All other miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned by supervisor.
SUPERVISOR: Associate Director SACC/Camp Director
HOURS: Seasonal Hourly
- Approximately 25-39 hours per week (depending on availability)
- Hours vary between 7:00 AM & 6:30 PM
- Days Monday to Friday - 5 days per week
- Must be 18 years or older
