Job Summary:
The Perioperative Assistant (RN) is a Registered Nurse who provides direct patient care and support within the operating room environment. This role focuses on assisting the surgical team, ensuring a safe and sterile environment, and facilitating smooth surgical procedures. The Perioperative Assistant works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technicians, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality patient care before, during, and after surgical interventions. This position also provides key support to the Perioperative Manager with staffing, payroll, and optimizing the flow of the department.
Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):
- Patient Care:
- Verifies patient identification, surgical procedure, and surgical site.
- Assists with patient positioning and prepping for surgery according to established protocols.
- Provides emotional support and reassurance to patients and their families.
- Monitors patient vital signs and reports any changes to the surgical team.
- Administers medications as directed by the surgeon or anesthesiologist (where applicable and within scope of practice).
- Documents patient care accurately and completely in the electronic health record.
- Operating Room Preparation and Maintenance:
- Ensures the operating room is properly stocked with supplies and equipment.
- Maintains a sterile environment according to infection control protocols.
- Assists with the set-up and breakdown of surgical equipment.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgical team and provides necessary instruments and supplies.
- Cleans and disinfects the operating room after each procedure.
- Surgical Assistance:
- Assists the surgeon during surgical procedures, including passing instruments and supplies.
- Holds retractors and other instruments as directed.
- Assists with wound closure and dressing application.
- Maintains accurate counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments.
- Department Support:
- Assists the Perioperative Manager with staffing schedules, ensuring adequate coverage for all surgical procedures.
- Contributes to payroll processes by tracking employee hours and submitting relevant information.
- Works with the Perioperative Manager to analyze and optimize patient flow within the department, identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions.
- Helps maintain accurate records related to staffing, payroll, and department operations.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Communicates effectively with all members of the surgical team.
- Collaborates with other departments to ensure efficient patient flow.
- Reports any incidents or potential safety hazards.
- Participates in team meetings and educational activities.
- Professional Development:
- Maintains current knowledge of surgical procedures and techniques.

Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state [Specify State].
