Position Specific Summary
The part-time Communication Specialist will support the Department Monday – Friday up to 20 hours a week.
Position Summary
This is the first level in a three-level communications series responsible for creating and disseminating information about the County. The Communication Specialist I position is responsible for handling media inquiries, writing or editing news releases, managing communications, developing communication plans, managing collateral material, field producing video events, taking photos, managing online content, and managing social media accounts.
Essential Functions
- Manage internal and external communications, as assigned.
- Perform administrative activities in support of the public information office.
- Prepare, edit and design publications and brochures.
- Perform research and gather data for communication planning.
- Serve as a department liaison and provide communications support.
- Prepare and coordinate content for news releases and presentations.
- Provide website support focusing on community outreach.
- Identify and maintain processes that promote citizen engagement.
- Participate in event and special project coordination.
- Research sources for promotional items and maintain documentation.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience : Minimum of two years of public relations, communications, or related experience.
Education : Bachelor's degree in Public Relations, Communications, or a directly related field.
Licenses and Certifications : May require a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of practices and methods of graphic design, news writing, critical thinking, and applicable laws.
Skills
Planning, designing and editing communications materials, analyzing findings, coordinating deadlines, and providing customer service.
Abilities
Adaptability, building trust, collaboration, effective communication, and maintaining technical / professional knowledge.
Computer Skills
Advanced in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
Work Environment
Works in an office setting with moderate noise.
