Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, a Substitute Teacher is responsible for supervising students in the event that their regular teacher is unable to lead class. A Substitute Teacher’s duties include managing classroom behavior, quickly interpreting lesson plans, providing instruction and ensuring that students’ learning progresses smoothly.
Essential Functions
- Implement lesson plans to ensure academic time is used effectively and keep students engaged.
- Follow school policies and lesson plans, assigning appropriate tasks and homework.
- Demonstrate professionalism in teaching and maintain a positive classroom environment.
- Manage classroom behavior and ensure a safe, respectful space for students and staff in accordance with school, school division, state, and all applicable laws and regulations.
- Supervise students and maintain safety both in the classroom and during out-of-class activities.
- Protect school property and report any student injuries, incidents, or discipline issues immediately.

Educational Requirements and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent or a higher degree.
- Must complete all required information and background checks designated through the MCPS Policy Manual.
