Position Summary
Perform the most complex of residential and commercial inspections for compliance with all applicable building codes. This lead position is responsible for reviewing plans, approving construction documents, and issuing permits; may perform investigations in response to fires or public complaints; and may also assist staff with inspections issues and answer questions.
Essential Functions
Perform the most complex field inspections and enters results, defect codes, and notes on commercial and residential projects to ensure compliance with all applicable codes
Issue notices of violations, including stop work orders and follows-up to ensure issue has been addressed
Investigate complaints about potential code violations and conducts research on inspection history as needed
Meet with architects, engineers, contractors, town planners and other individuals throughout the course of the design and construction of projects
Prepare and analyze inspection reports to include collecting data and writing reports
Provide advice to design professionals, town planners, homeowners, the public and contractors regarding code compliance, applicable procedures, and other related issues
Serve on committees, task forces, and other teams as requested
Make sure that customer solutions, practices, and procedures are carried out and achieve their objectives
Complete assigned inspections to meet the customer’s schedule
May assist fire personnel at emergency incidents
As applicable, provide front office support, which may include: answering telephones and providing information to callers; periodically staffing service points that require in-person interactions with customers or staff; and/or, performing other related activities. Minimum Qualifications
Experience
Minimum of three years of inspection experience or five years in a construction trade
Education: Associates degree in related field
Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: Yes
Licenses and Certifications
Ability to obtain a Level III certification in at least one construction trade or Level I or higher certification in four construction trades within one year of hire
Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
Requires County Driving Privileges
Some positions may require a Fire Inspectors/Investigator license or certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners
Preferred Qualifications
