Position Summary
-
Provides medical care and treatment to obstetrical patients under supervision of the obstetrician. Delivers babies and instructs patients in prenatal and postnatal health practices. Participates in initial examination of obstetrical patient and is assigned responsibility of care, treatment and delivery of patient.

Minimum Qualifications

Work Experience

Two years of Nurse Midwife experience in a hospital environment preferred.

Education-
Master’s of Science Degree in Nursing required.

Certifications/Licensure-
Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse License (or temporary work permit) in the Commonwealth of Kentucky required.

Current APRN certification from a board recognized national organization required.

Current Nurse-Midwife License (or temporary work permit) in the Commonwealth of Kentucky required.

Job Specific Performance Standards

The duties listed below are a summary of the major essential functions of this position. The position may require other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned, and specific functions may change from time to time.
- Examines patient during pregnancy, utilizing physical findings, laboratory test results and patient’s statements.
- Evaluates condition and ensures patient’s progress is normal.
- Discusses case with obstetrician to assure observation of specified practices.
- Instructs patient in diet and prenatal health practices.
- Delivers infant and performs postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure patient and infant are responding normally. Stays with patient during labor to reassure patient and to administer medication.
- Administers stipulated emergency measures and arranges for immediate contact of obstetrician when deviations from standard are encountered during pregnancy or delivery.
- Visits patient during postpartum period in hospital to examine patient and instruct in care of self and infant.
- Maintains record of cases for inclusion in establishment of the patient file.
- Conducts classes for groups of patients and families to provide information concerning pregnancy, childbirth and family orientation. May instruct classes in midwifery.
- Maintains standards of certification requirements through continuing education programs.
- Promotes and establishes an atmosphere of Total Quality Improvement.
- Utilizes communication and follow up of patients via electronic methods.
