We are building an AI assistant that saves consumers time, money, and stress on health insurance and benefits, starting first with medical bills.

Medical bills are a massive problem. They are confusing, over 40% contain errors, 17% of claims are denied by insurance, and often represent very large sums of money. As a result, 100 million Americans are saddled with medical debt, and medical bills cause nearly 70% of personal bankruptcies in the US.

Dealing with unexpectedly high medical bills is time-consuming, complex, and stressful. Stuck between their providers, payers, and bill collectors, consumers too frequently have to make numerous phone calls, wait on hold, and even send paper letters and faxes. Appealing insurance denials, resolving billing errors, negotiating bills, and filing out-of-network claims require expert knowledge that most consumers don't have.

Thanks to AI and new healthcare regulations around data access and price transparency, we can now automate this soul-crushing work and empower consumers to fight back against this broken system. Beyond medical bills, we help people through their entire healthcare journey as they pick their health insurance plans and benefits, or look for care that fits their budget.

MedBill AI is founded by 2 Oscar Health veterans, the first health insurance company built around a full stack technology platform and a relentless focus on serving its members. We joined Oscar pre-product, stayed through the IPO and helped it grow to over 1M members. We've worked across Oscar's entire stack and led many key projects, including its in-house telemedicine platform and claim system, positioning us uniquely to take on MedBill AI. We're proud of how Oscar raised the bar for what people should expect from their health insurance, and we’re excited to have an even larger impact with MedBill AI by taking the side of consumers unequivocally, regardless of their health insurance.

About the role

We're seeking a highly creative and versatile Senior Product Designer (Founding Designer) to join our early-stage team. You'll be responsible for shaping our visual identity, user experience, and overall design strategy for our V1 app launch. As our first full-time designer, you'll have a unique opportunity to refine our aesthetic, own the continuous build of our design system, and create a cohesive brand experience across all touch points. This role might be a good fit if you have 4-7 years of design experience, have worked in both large companies and startups, and are comfortable wearing multiple hats in a fast-paced environment. You'd be an ideal candidate if you're passionate about our mission to transform healthcare journeys and thrive in an environment where you can take on diverse challenges, develop innovative solutions, and grow into a future Head of Design role.

What You'll Do

• Lead Comprehensive Design: Spearhead UX/UI design across our entire platform, including:
• Marketing website, iOS, Android, Application website, and internal tools
• Our consumer-facing application with an emphasis on user support experiences
• Public-facing web presence for various stakeholders
• Brand identity and marketing materials across various distribution platforms (digital and print)
• Drive Design Projects: Manage the full design lifecycle from conceptualization to launch, including:
• Establishing design patternsCreating low and high-fidelity mockups
• Developing interactive prototypes
• Working with our lead product manager to support successful product releases
• Champion User-Centric Design: Conduct and facilitate user research to deeply understand needs, pain points, and opportunities for improvement.
• Engage with Clients: Participate actively in customer interactions to gather requirements and deliver innovative design solutions.
• Build Scalable Design Infrastructure: Develop and refine design systems, processes, and tools to support our growing product ecosystem and brand evolution.
• Collaborate Strategically: Work closely with cross-functional teams and CEO to balance rapid growth with long-term sustainability and profitability.
• Foster Design Excellence: As we expand, build processes and culture that fosters design excellence in everything that we do

About you

• Experience: 4-7 years of design experience, preferably 3 years of product design experience with a mix of startup and large company environments. Experience in D2C applications is a plus.
• Proven Track Record: You've designed consumer-facing applications that demonstrate clear impact on adoption and retention. You have a portfolio demonstrating your design taste and creativity.
• Data-Driven Design: Strong ability to use analytics and user behavior data to inform design decisions and optimize forkey metrics.
• Versatility: Proficient in various design disciplines, including UX/UI, brand design, and visual design.
• Technical Skills: Expert in design tools like Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and prototyping software.
• User-Centric: Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and ability to translate user needs into elegant design solutions.
• Entrepreneurial: You're resourceful, adaptable, and thrive in ambiguity. You can take projects from concept to execution with minimal guidance.
• Communication: Excellent verbal and visual communication skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions and collaborate effectively with non-designers.
• Growth-Oriented: You're excited by the opportunity to grow into a Head of Design role as we scale and build a design function from the ground up.
