PRODUCE MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION
Purpose: To oversee the selection, ordering, receiving, pricing, stocking and promotion of fresh produce to meet company goals for sales, margin, inventory turns, labor costs and customer service. To maintain retail and work areas maintained in a clean, safe, orderly condition.
Responsibilities:
I. CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Assist all departments as appropriate to ensure the highest possible store operations and customer service.
- Model exceptional customer service skills and communicate expectations to staff.
II. PLANNING
- With General Manager, set sales, margin and inventory turn goals for department. Review monthly and quarterly reports.
- Plan department layout, product locations and resets to ensure maximum sales and efficient shopping and stocking.
- Price produce to achieve margin and sales goals while maintaining a competitive image.
III. PURCHASING
- Negotiate with suppliers for favorable prices, terms, quality, delivery, and credits.
- Follow the company's product selection guidelines.
- Evaluate suppliers and investigate new sources of supply.
- Ensure appropriate receiving of produce deliveries.
IV. MERCHANDISING
- Plan and maintain attractive produce displays.
- Manage shrink.
- Provide product information for promotions, staff, and customers.
- Coordinate in-store product samples on a regular basis.
V. PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
- Hire qualified applicants following established policy.
- Supervise all produce department staff.
- Ensure on-the-job training.
- Conduct performance evaluations.
- Recommend pay increases within department budget.
- Take disciplinary action as needed following established policy.
- Schedule hours for department staff within payroll allocation and approve time cards.
VI. MANAGEMENT TEAM
- Participate in development of operating and capital budgets.
- Review financial reports for department performance and made adjustments as needed.
- Fulfill requirements for ongoing education and development.
- Participate in management team meetings.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least two years of purchasing and merchandising for a department in a natural food store.
- Experience in retail produce.
- Supervisory experience: hiring, training, evaluating, giving directions.
- Ability to read financial statements, (or at least firm grasp of margin and pricing.)
- Organized, consistently follows through on commitments.
- Knowledge of current trends in natural foods industry.
- Communications skills--clear directions, good listener.
- Regular, predictable attendance.
