OVERVIEW:

The primary responsibilities of this position include assisting the admissions staff with pre-operative care of the patient, and the registered nurse with the post-op care, including dressing and transporting, providing nourishment, and comfort measures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To assist and support nurses in the pre/post op care unit with patient care activities.

  • Assists in patient admissions as directed by the R.N.
  • Assists in changing, dressing and securing patient belongings as directed by the R.N.
  • Assists transporting patients as directed by the R.N.
  • Uses aseptic technique and personal protective equipment as necessary.
  • Takes initiative to provide a safe, clean and neat environment for patients and personnel, including cleaning counter tops, bedside tables, workstations and floors.
  • Performs daily terminal cleaning of patient stretchers, recliners, and medical equipment and takes initiative to clean, move, and prepare stretchers and recliners as necessary
  • Utilizes good communication skills to decrease patient and/or escort anxiety.
  • Transports specimens to laboratory.
  • Presents friendly and helpful demeanor to all patients, escorts, physicians and co-workers.
  • Cleans staff lounge area as assigned as necessary and assigned.
  • Demonstrates competency in taking patient blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and respiration when needed.
  • Demonstrates competency in removal of IV
  • Demonstrates competency of CLIA waived testing such pregnancy and blood glucose testing
  • Provides nourishments to patients in the recovery area
  • Assist with ambulation to bathroom and /or bed/pan/urinal needs

To function effectively as a member of the surgery center team:

  • Reports for work in a timely manner and maintains good attendance record.
  • Utilizes time effectively.
  • Demonstrates interest and enthusiasm towards work and contributes to increased moral and positive attitude in department and facility.
  • Utilizes equipment and supplies effectively and efficiently, takes initiative to maintain adequate supply.
  • Organizes work effectively and appropriately to finish tasks in a timely manner and demonstrates the ability to produce results.
  • Participates as a team member in taking responsibility for patient care and other related activities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to deal with other team members.
  • Shows flexibility in accommodating schedule changes (i.e. working late or early, changing work days, etc.).
  • Assists with other duties (i.e. inventory, logistical tasks, etc.) as directed by supervisor.

Participates in continuous Quality Improvement activities.

  • Promotes high patient satisfaction levels.
  • Develops good inter- and intra- department working relationships to promote quality work and quality care.
  • Participates in on-going committee work.

Employee must present professional, caring, and courteous image.

  • ust be willing to take responsibility and maintain accountability.
  • Employee must possess good organizational and excellent communication skills.

COMPETENCIES:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Completed a Medical Assistant program or 3-5 years’ experience as patient aide
  • High School graduate or successfully completed GED course

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES REGISTRATIONS:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant I and II
  • BLS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Extensive mobility, walking and standing
  • At least 95% of time spent pushing, pulling, lifting, turning, and assisting patients.
  • Potential exists for exposure to blood and body fluids as well as other hazardous materials. Personal Protective equipment should be utilized as needed
  • Employee must be able to lift 50 pounds
