Job Summary

The Ophthalmology Technician - Clinics assists ophthalmologists and optometrists in providing high-quality eye care services to patients in an outpatient clinic setting. This role is responsible for performing preliminary vision tests, collecting patient history, and assisting with diagnostic procedures. The Ophthalmology Technician ensures efficient clinic operations while maintaining patient safety and compliance with healthcare regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts preliminary vision tests, including visual acuity, tonometry, visual field testing, and refraction assessments.
  • Collects and documents patient medical history, chief complaints, and any previous eye conditions or treatments.
  • Assists ophthalmologists and optometrists with diagnostic tests, procedures, and treatments as needed.
  • Administers eye drops and medications under the supervision of a licensed provider.
  • Educates patients on eye health, contact lens care, and pre/post-procedure instructions.
  • Operates and maintains ophthalmic equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
  • Assists in minor surgical procedures and laser treatments, following aseptic techniques and safety protocols.
  • Ensures compliance with infection control, HIPAA, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Manages patient flow and appointment scheduling to optimize clinic efficiency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • 0-1 years of experience as an ophthalmic or optometric technician required
  • Experience in a clinical or outpatient ophthalmology setting preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of ophthalmic procedures, vision testing, and eye care practices.
  • Proficiency in using ophthalmic instruments and diagnostic equipment.
  • Excellent patient-care and communication skills to provide clear instructions and ensure comfort.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to document patient history and test results accurately.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and ophthalmic documentation systems.
  • Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA regulations.

Licenses and Certifications

  • COA - Certified Ophthalmic Assistant required or
  • COT - Certified Ophthalmic Medical Tech required
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support required
