What are the responsibilities and job description for the Histology Technician position at Medical Pathology Associates?
Medical Pathology Associates ("MPA") prides itself on performing pathology services at the highest level of quality, reliability and service to clinicians and their patients. We process tissue in a state-of-the-art laboratory that is centrally located in Houston, Texas. Through rigorous quality assurance and an expertise in pathology, MPA strives to continually improve diagnostic precision and ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
The Histology Technician produces HIGH QUALITY diagnostic and testing materials for our Pathologist on specimens received from clients on patients. All three entities are our customers and the work of the Histologist- from start to archive- is expected to be exemplary, with attention to detail and great care to protect and serve these customers in the best manner possible.
Key Job Functions
Produce high quality diagnostic materials as requested by the pathologist to progress each specimen. These materials may be generated in any of the following processes :
Grossing, processing, embedding and routine H&E slides
Special stains, recuts, deepers, and other additional slide presentations
IHC, either in house or through affiliated reference labs
Supporting send-out, reference or other related work requested by, or of, our laboratory
Performs Quality Control and documentation of all recorded processes using the laboratory information system, spreadsheets, and manual methods, as applicable. Cleans and / or maintains instrumentation, work benches and spaces, archived materials, and other relevant products
Use of blood borne pathogen safety methods and personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Has a strong working knowledge of basic computing programs (PC) as well as the lab information system (LIS) to manage workflow, document issues, look up cases and other routine inquiries. Able to follow a procedure to accession and perform other less frequent tasks on a PC and LI S
With appropriate credentials, may be trained and scheduled to perform gross dissection for pathology specimens. Separate credentialing and training will be added at the commencement of this additional task
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Strong preference given to Associates or Bachelors degree in a related science filed, or successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program or Associates, Bachelors, or accrued credits of 60 semester hours from a regionally accredited college or university, with a combination of 24 hours equally divided between biology and chemistry
Valid registration as Histotechnician HT or HTL required, preference give to HT or HTL certification of QIHC
