What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pre-Analytic Specialist position at Medical Pathology Associates?
Medical Pathology Associates ("MPA") prides itself on performing pathology services at the highest level of quality, reliability and service to clinicians and their patients. We process tissue in a state-of-the-art laboratory that is centrally located in Houston, Texas. Through rigorous quality assurance and an expertise in pathology, MPA strives to continually improve diagnostic precision and ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
The Pre-Analytic Associate performs pre-analytical and post-analytical work to set up incoming specimens and support ongoing diagnostic testing specimen handling. This includes materials shared with other laboratory facilities. Their attention to detail, organization and accuracy as well as speed of work are key components as they impact every sample entering the lab.
Key Job Functions :
1. Receive, accession, and track incoming samples using the lab information system, Microsoft office programs and other manual methods.
2. Set up materials for techs to support material production including cassettes, slides, processing send-outs, returned send-outs, and other procedures as needed.
3. Has a strong working knowledge of basic computing programs (PC) as well as the lab information system (LIS) to manage workflow, document issues, look up cases and other routine inquiries. Able to follow a procedure to accession and perform other less frequent tasks on a PC and LIS.
4. Maintain supplies for accession and lab areas.
5. Support additional work including QA / QC, projects, and process evaluation
6. Maintain a clean, organized space using blood borne pathogen standards for personal protective equipment and work areas.
7. Manage issues as they arise. Communicate with other staff to assure patient care and the safety of patients and staff.
8. Performing Quality Control using printed reports to check accuracy of data, making corrections.
9. Scanning, uploading, and logging information into various information systems and electronic storage locations.
10. Coordinating with front office and laboratory staff to effectively handle workload and resolve issues.
11. Communicating with clients to obtain additional information.
12. Other duties and tasks as assigned
Qualifications :
High School diploma or GED required. Associates degree or higher in science or health-related field is preferred.
Medical terminology or Medical Assistance certification preferred.
Two years in specimen handling or other front medical office field requiring charting or accessioning is preferred.
