POSITION PURPOSE:
Provides nursing care services to women during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period in accordance with the policies of MHS and directives of the medical staff. Possess the ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instruction or directions. Adheres to MHS Standard Precaution policy and procedure. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor. Work with supervisors, other department managers and medical staff in order to provide the best patient care possible.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepares mothers for the process of labor and delivery.
- Monitors high-risk patients closely to ascertain any conditions that may require the care of the Physician.
- Attends to the comfort of the mother in labor, and assists the mother in the delivery room in having a safe delivery.
- Administers medications, blood transfusions, and emergency measures necessary in the case of such conditions as hemorrhage or shock.
- Offers emotional support and comfort for the patient during childbirth.
- Assists the mother after the birth of the baby in the healing process.
- Assesses the mother’s physical and emotional condition and lends whatever assistance the mother needs in adapting to her new baby and its needs.
- Counsels and educates the new mother, father, and siblings in new baby care and needs.
- Any other job duty as allowed by licensure.
- Attends in-service training at the request of their Director, including hospital orientation and Annual Skills Fair.
- Will be preceptor to new hires as requested.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:
- Current Texas Registered Nurse Licensure. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. One to two years’ related experience and/or training preferred.
- RN License to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in the State of Texas or Active Multi-State RN Compact License, or GN Permit. (Employees with RN Compact Licensure are required to obtain Texas RN License within 90 days of hire date.)
- BLS required within 30 days of hire; ACLS required within 90 days of hire; NRP required within 90 days of hire; STABLE required within 1 year of hire; Introduction to Fetal Monitoring required within 2 months of hire; Intermediate Fetal Monitoring and Assessment required within 12 months of hire; STABLE class will be completed within 1 year of hire. Advanced Fetal Monitoring and Assessment is preferred.
- Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served as applicable.
