POSITION PURPOSE:
Provides nursing care services in accordance with the policies of MHS and directives of the medical staff. Possess the ability to comprehend and follow written or verbal instruction or directions. Adheres to MHS Standard Precaution policy and procedure. Performs other duties as requested by supervisor. Work with supervisors, other department managers and medical staff in order to provide the best patient care possible.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans, assesses, directs and participates in the delivery of operating room nursing care.
- Monitors cardiac rhythm, and evaluates and treats cardiac arrhythmias appropriately
- Manages care of patient receiving intravenous drug therapy and monitors hemodynamic stability, according to established procedure.
- Assists with various surgical procedures including but not limited to: Cholecystectomy, appendectomy, bowel resections, C-section, hysterectomy, D&C, hip fixation of fractures, ophthalmology, etc. with understanding the pathophysiology involved.
- Review physician’s orders, laboratory requests, and reports to physician as needed.
- Cares for surgical patients over the age of two (2) preoperatively including statement of surgical procedure, IV care, fluid and electrolyte maintenance, monitoring adequate urine output, incisional dressing, drains, NG tube, recovery from anesthesia, adequate ventilation, 02 therapy, vital signs and signs and symptoms of complications and reports them to the physician in a timely manner.
- Maintains proficiency in proper aseptic technique in the operating room and autoclaves instruments if necessary. Demonstrates ability to recognize improperly functioning equipment.
- Provides nursing measures to prevent any loss of skin integrity and maintains safety in the OR. Recognizes emergency situations and institutes the established procedure for the specific situation.
- Maintains accurate and timely operating room documentation.
- Provides psychosocial care to the patient and family including assessment of needs and provides nursing interventions according to the policy and procedure.
- Takes call for surgeries scheduled during off hours.
- Cares for patients receiving minor procedures including endoscopies and pain management. Notes signs and symptoms of complications and reports them to the physician in a timely manner. Completes documentation in a timely manner.
- Administers IV conscious sedation.
- Evaluates the quality of nursing care in compliance with the established standards of nursing care.
- Maintains positive and effective relationships with other departments and the Medical Staff.
- Consults with physicians to resolve problems and to obtain and provide patient care input.
- Maintains open communication and problem solving atmosphere with other departments to achieve quality patient care.
- Any other job duty as allowed by licensure.
- Attends in-service training at the request of their Director, including hospital orientation and Annual Skills Fair.
- Will be preceptor to new hires as requested.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION:
- Current Texas Registered Nurse Licensure. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. BLS required within 30 days of hire; ACLS required within 90 days of hire; PALS required within 6 months of hire.
- RN License to practice as a professional Registered Nurse in the State of Texas or Active Multi-State RN
- Compact License, or GN Permit. (Employees with RN Compact Licensure are required to obtain Texas RN License within 90 days of hire date.)
- Prior work experience as a Registered Nurse in the Operating and Recovery Room preferred.
- Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility and department/unit which are specific to the needs of the patient population served as applicable.
