What are the responsibilities and job description for the Histology Technician position at Medix?
Role Overview:
- Preparation of high-quality tissue samples for histopathologic assessment.
- Proper identification and orientation of tissue samples for embedding.
- Processing of tissue samples for both paraffin and frozen sections.
- Proficiency in microtomy for routine paraffin and frozen tissue sections.
- Preparation of reagents and execution of routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, non-routine histochemical staining, and manual/automated immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures.
- Conducting quality control checks on all prepared microscope slides.
- Knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of equipment utilized in tissue sample preparation, ensuring a clean and organized laboratory environment.
Responsibilities:
- Documenting and maintaining the use and upkeep of laboratory equipment.
- Ensuring a safe and orderly laboratory environment.
- Conducting paraffin tissue processing.
- Properly identifying tissue sample orientation and conducting paraffin embedding procedures.
- Utilizing microtomy skills to prepare routine microscopic slides according to established protocols.
- Performing routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and cover slipping of slides.
- Troubleshooting equipment malfunctions and taking corrective actions to minimize disruptions.
- Analyzing raw data and addressing deviations from standard operating procedures or protocol requirements.
- Handling hazardous chemicals, including disposal and record-keeping.
- Potential duties may include ordering warehouse supplies and maintaining laboratory inventory records.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree (BS) preferred. Alternatively, an Associate's degree (AA) with relevant experience and training will be considered.
- Minimum of 1 year of laboratory experience and/or training.
- Eligibility for Histotechnician (HT) certification within one year of employment is desirable.
- Proficiency in tissue organ identification, microtomy skills, and routine hematoxylin and eosin staining preferred.
- Adherence to proper handling and disposal procedures for biological and chemical substances.
- Compliance with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) protocols, including N-95 respirator, face mask, safety glasses, goggles, face shield, gloves, and lab coat as required.
