Job Summary
The Music Director provides the music activities for the Catholic Worship Service. The Music Director shall provide labor and management to support the responsibilities outlined within this PWS. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to: playing, practicing, and scheduling music for the various Catholic worship services in collaboration with the Catholic Priest.
Director services shall be required for rehearsals, liturgies, and special liturgies. Special liturgies include but are not limited to: memorial masses, funeral liturgies, combined services, faith-specific holidays, and occasional support for special events. These special liturgies could occur on any day of the week, to include weekdays.
General Responsibilities
Music Director shall:
- Provide director support for the Catholic worship service at Buckley Space Force Base Chapel
- Provide support for a minimum of 1 rehearsal and 1 worship service each week for the Catholic Service.
- Collaborate musical selections with the Catholic Priest and designated music accompanist(s).
- Sing and lead the choir and congregation in worship.
- Prepare music in keeping with the respective liturgy worship service.
- Coordinate all support requirements with the Catholic Priest or their designated representative.
- Assist the Catholic Priest or their designated representative in developing the following in regards to Music Director Programs as appropriate: annual calendar of events, Chapel Tithes and Offerings Fund budget, appropriated fund budget, and core volunteer training requirements.
- Return any and all United States (U.S.) Government-owned music scores and equipment obtained in the performance of the required duties following the last service provided under the contract.
- Not engage in the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted materials by photocopying or any other means that would expose the Government to liability for penalties under existing or future copyright laws.
- Ensure that all facilities used are properly secured, to include all doors and windows, following the conclusion of all rehearsals and worship services. In addition, the Music Director will ensure applicable music equipment (to include cords, microphones, DI boxes, etc.) is properly stored following each rehearsal and worship service.
- Request and maintain all supplies and resources necessary for running the Catholic music program.
Specific Responsibilities.
Music Director shall:
- Arrive at least 60 minutes prior to the beginning of worship services and special services, and 15 minutes prior to the beginning of each rehearsal. Adequate preparation must be made for the worship service to include musical warm-up, review, and correct (if applicable) all visual media (e.g., Microsoft PowerPoint presentation of musical arrangements for worship service), in coordination with the audio-visual volunteer testing of sound equipment including sound checks of microphones.
- Submit purchase/repair requests as needed for support of the music program to the Catholic Priest or their designated representative.
- Be accountable for opening and securing any facilities used for rehearsals, and ensuring any space utilized is left in a clean and professional appearance.
- Maintain a professional attitude and environment to include hygiene and appearance.
- Select music that is consistent with the nature of the designated liturgy.
- Provide arranged, improved, and/or scored music as appropriate for compatibility with the type of liturgy or other functions of the Catholic Priest’s program at which it was rendered.
- Attend any meetings identified by the Catholic Priest or their designee regarding music support.
- Provide lyrics and ensure proper formatting as needed for all liturgies as required.
- Set up all sound system requirements and ensure powered and working correctly for all liturgies or events, to include rehearsals and performances.
- Complete facility requests, as required, to reserve chapel facilities IAW local Chapel Policies or Operating Instructions. When completing facility requests, all facility requests must be approved by the Delta Chaplain or his/her designee before assuming space has been reserved for Catholic Music activities.
Duty Hours.
- Music Director shall be required to be present for duty hours and times for performance include all rehearsals, services, and special services. Requirements vary per season/month to fulfill this contract. The estimated number of events over the course of 12 months is 129.
- The standard duty location for contract services (e.g. worship services, rehearsals, etc.) is the Buckley Chapel unless otherwise approved by the Catholic Priest or Delta Chaplain (or his/her representative).
- Absences due to illness or family emergency will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
- Rehearsals shall be held at an appropriate time to allow for maximum participation of volunteers.
Rehearsals shall be held separately from, and in addition to, the 60-minute window prior to services and special services.
Duration of rehearsals shall be an appropriate length to ensure adequate preparation for performances at weekly services or special services (no less than 1 hour and no more than 3 hours in length). The length of rehearsal must be considerate of the time of volunteers participating therein.
- Hours of Operation; Normal Chapel workdays are Monday through Friday except US Federal Holidays and family days. Hours of operation for Chapel staff are from 0730 to 1630 Monday through Friday. Regular meetings will not be held during the US official holidays.
Education and Experience
Music Director shall:
- Have 2 or more years of college in music performance (or related field), or equivalent years of related experience in a chapel/church setting. The contractor must have experience and knowledge of playing traditional Catholic music.
- Be able to sing and lead the congregation in worship.
- Organize and lead a choir.
- Be able to sight-read, improvise, and play music using piano, keyboard, or guitar.
- Sing and prepare music in keeping with the respective liturgy.
- Possess the ability to develop and maintain a healthy and positive relationship with chapel staff, contractors, and volunteers.
- Be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English in order to perform all responsibilities outlined.
- Have experience operating and troubleshooting sound systems.
